After listening to some of my son's coaches,I took my son( 2015 grad) to a Perfect game showcase just to get him the experience and to see where he measured up. He was really nervous to start and we thought he didn't do as well as he normally does, he's a pitcher his velocity was lower than normal etc. We were glad we did it though so hopefully next time he knows what to expect and can do much better. Anyway to our surprise he was named to the top prospect list and the top prospect team and now under national ranking on his player profile page it says follow. What exactly does that mean. Sorry for being clueless, just new at this.

To the best of my knowledge, here is the breakdown on the PG rankings:

Top 500 will have ranking numbers visible, i.e. where they are Nationally, In State, and by Position. This isn't a pure 500 as maybe 20-25 players are actually ranked #500.

Top 1000: The next 500

High Follow: The next 500

Follow: The next 500

Other than the first 500, the remainder are in bunches, not individually ranked, meaning you won't find a player ranked 1398.

As you go through this process, also understand the subjectivity and politics involved in these rankings. Evaluating teenagers is NOT a science, they all grow and mature at different rates, and one evaluator may be looking and valuing a certain aspect of a player's game differently than another.

Coaches and organizations along with visibility greatly affect the rankings too. Plus performance must meet opportunity along with luck. Players don't perform their best 100% of the time and it depends whose watching/when, and who is promoting them to the right people.

I know this will set off some people that think this is a pure process but whenever humans are involved there is no such thing as a pure process. I have seen totally unranked players get ranked immediately upon joining a nationally known team, without any games or showcases being played yet. Is it the rule? No, but it does happen.

Bottom line is that it is a fine accomplishment to be ranked/noticed on any level. Use it as motivation to continue to work hard in the classroom and on the field in order to achieve his personal goals.
