My son's Summer ball team has a chance to go to the PG Super25 National 16U event this year in Ft Myers. Needing to find out if this is a well scouted event, and if so what schools are usually represented. We would have to rearrange our schedule to attend and miss out on a pretty good tourney in state, plus it's a week long tourney. If anybody has experience concerning this event, would love to hear about it. Just trying to see if the extra time and $$ would be worth it when it comes to recruiting. Thx!
Been to the Super 25 two years in a row. A handful of SEC schools came to watch a few high profile pitchers, few other walking around, but not a ton (son was on 16U team then). There's a chance to compete against some of the top teams in the country to see how good your team really is. But....
If we had to do it all over again, we'd have gone to the PG WWBA. You'll know exactly when the PG WWBA is and you'll know way ahead of time if your team is going. It benefits all, and there's a better chance of having the players somewhat rested and prepared for an intense week, both competitively and for the heat & humidity.
With the PG Super 25 you have to win a qualifier event to attend, and depending on when the qualifier date is, your team might be scrambling for flights and hotels. It's a potential tournament event, and not all the parents are dialed into "having that weekend blocked off, in case the team wins the qualifier". Both years we went we had a few kids missing because of lack of communication between club and parents.
Also, make sure your club has an easy tournament schedule the weekend before and after the Super 25 event. Our club mistakenly scheduled another away tournament the weekend before this date, only for us to win the qualifier, and have to be traveling for 10 days straight. Kids were exhausted and not used to 100 degrees heat and 99% humidity...tough exhausting week for the boys. Team came in 3rd only to lose to Tri State Arsenal in a semi. Florida St. and Alabama were there to watch two Tri State players and they ended preoccupied with our teams MIF and LHP throwing 90. (It was hilarious with both college coaches asking who the hell is this team from the Chicago area???)
The few top national teams that attended the event were Southeastern based teams who had an easier travel schedule, they came from another PG event in Atlanta straight down to Ft. Myers. These top teams had deep rosters of pitchers and catchers, with some of the pitchers just showing up for the weekend games.
Very well run event, our boys had a blast... In fairness, our club organizers could have been smarter when planning the schedule and making sure all parents blocked off that particular weekend. At the same time I'd rather have a fixed schedule for the summer, lots of traveling - lots of costs.
As 17U's this year our team is going to the PG WWBA. I've heard plenty of college coaches around for the rising senior summer. My 2018 already has about 15 schools saying they'll be there...
