It's been awhile since I checked in, but I have a question for the well-informed folks on this forum.

We are contemplating sending our senior to PG's Uncommitted Showcase on June 12,13 in San Diego. My question is this: Has anyone attended this showcase in recent years and can you offer an idea of what kind of colleges attended? I have no problem spending the money because this is obviously a targeted situation where seniors who have yet to sign are presumably in front of coaches looking to fill some holes, but I want to be sure that a significant number of interested schools attend. So any information is truly appreciated.

The uncommitted showcase is part of the Sunshine West showcase. One team with uncommitted players plays against a couple of the Sunshine West teams. The number of scouts in attendance depends on the players on the teams that are playing. Last year there was a coach from Michigan there for the first game and I didn't see any at the second game. That doesn't mean they weren't there. One of the uncommitted players did end up at Michigan. Overall you'll see quite a few college coaches and a few pro scouts at the Sunshine West but they will go to the games where the players they are interested are at. The uncommitted team does play against teams with good players so that helps.
I wish I knew the answer to your question. All I can add is I have heard from others that this is one PG event that does have lots of CA colleges there especially those not involved with Omaha. Remember many of the D1 guys will be going to the National PG in Florida as well, so budget may come into play. But this is just my theory. There are posters that might know facts that can help on this.

For those that have posted, is it possible you could list what colleges you know of that were there??? Or is that not the way its done?

It seems to me that a list would be a huge help for those that would like to pre notify colleges or call them to say they will be there. Sure would help us save a lot of time trying to figure this out. Most importantly would it not at least tip off those colleges that they may want to go see our players play.

Maybe the PG staff can post on this??

It is understood that this is no guarantee that they will be there but at least its a start in the right direction.

Thanks
In 2008 I remember NMSU, USC, Santa Clara, Hawaii, UC Davis, USF, Oklahoma?, and an Arizona JC among quite a few others being there. I don't know how many of those were at the uncommitted game though. My son was on a Sunshine West team with a lot of very good players and played against teams with very strong players so a lot of the colleges were at their games.

In 2009 I only remember seeing the coach from Michigan at the first of the uncommitted games, although since it was at the main site there must have been more coaches there.

Unfortunately, the uncommitted team's second game was the morning game on Sunday at the off-site if I remember correctly so I don't think too many coaches made it to that one even though there were players on both teams that coaches definitely would have been interested in seeing play. There were at least 5 players on the team that the uncommitted team played against on Sunday morning who are clear D1 or draft types so my guess is there were some coaches there. It did seem like they made a pretty good effort to get coaches to the uncommitted games.

Not necessarily. The coaches hang out where the best players are. If the players are equal at both sites at a given time then they'll tend to be at the main site. The uncommitted team plays one at the main site and one at the off site just like everyone else. Last year just happened to be an 8:30 am on Sunday game at the offsite. I'd have to go back to other years to see if that's a pattern or just the luck of the draw. (It looks like 2009 was the first year for having an uncommitted showcase in June on the west coast.)

At any showcase or camp with multiple sites you are going to see a bit of a disadvantage for pitchers who throw at the offsite only unless they happen to be on or playing against a team that the scouts/coaches really want to see. The position players all generally get exposure at both sites. My son attended 3 showcases/camps where there were multiple sites and happened to pitch offsite all 3 times. One time, at the 2008 Sunshine West, he was on such a good team that there were a lot of coaches at the offsite.

Just saw this and had to chime in - the Uncommitted Showcase has a special place in our hearts - it resulted in my son getting an opportunity to play D1 baseball, but as mentioned above, not surprisingly, there was certainly a lot of luck involved.

Here's our story in a nutshell: My son was hurt during his Junior year and chose not to do any showcases unless and until he was confident he had fully recovered. He had a very good Senior season leading his team to a section championship, so he was finally ready to attend a showcase (a bit late in the process). The Uncommitted Showcase was held in June just after the section playoffs were over. Our plan was to go to the showcase and use the PG rating as both a reality check (how did son compare to other skilled players?) and, assuming the rating was good, as a last minute tool to help promote our son in his search for a program in need of pitching.

It didn't quite work out that way. Instead there was a head coach of a D1 program in attendance at the showcase who saw and liked my son and had a need that matched. Who knows what would have happened if all those stars didn't line up - but we're just happy they did. Smile Maybe the original plan would have worked too, but who knows.

Bottom line - my son got lucky, but that luck wouldn't have happened if he didn't put himself out there. My advice - get as much exposure as your budget will allow - you just never know when the stars are going to line up and that unexpected opportunity will come your son's way. Best wishes.

If you have the talent, the coaches will know about it somehow at these kinds of showcases.
