Agree with njbb. Villanova is an excellent school on the Main Line with alot of other affluent colleges in the area. Degree to be proud of if you are smart enough to get in. High level school spirit.

Temple and LaSalle are both in areas that as a mother, I would be scared to death that my son would get shot at. (JMHO) You just have to watch the Philly news in our area to hear what happens in their area. Not sure about the others. They're all good schools but the only one I would send my son to would be Villanova for safety reasons unless your son wants to stay on campus all the time. (JMO)

Does anybody have any information on La Salle, Temple, St. Joes, Penn, or Villanova?

Agree with the other viewpoints:

Villanova...GREAT school academically, beautiful campus, ritzy area OUTSIDE of Philly on the Main Line. NOT a city school by any stretch of the imagination (or address!). It is located in Villanova, PA a beautiful suburb of Philly. Baseball stadium is very nice altho a bit far from campus. You can not beat the education...but it is EXPENSIVE.

LaSalle...in the city, in a not so great section. Campus itself is very nice (surprisingly GREEN for smack dab in the city)...but NOT if you leave campus! You need your city smarts to attend a school like LaSalle. ATlantic 10 conference. Been on campus many times, can honestly tell you I have NO IDEA where the baseball field is.

Temple. I believe they got a new coach last year who has pretty much turned the roster over this past year. Will be interesting to see how the team performs this season. I know a friend of my son's just transferred to Temple from a JUCO in NY. I see you are from State College...PSU added Temple to the schedule this year and they play up at Lubrano in State College....might be worth look for you when they come to town. Temple is definetly a CITY school...lots of concrete...not so nice surrounding neighborhoods. Interestingly, Temple's field is in AMBLER, PA....not very convenient to campus. Ambler is a suburb of Philly....a nice area..but NOT close to campus.

St. Joe's....traditionally a pretty good baseball program in the Atlantic 10. Altho a city school...in a pretty good section of Philly....City Line Avenue section. Their field is in Norristown, PA tho....which is a decent hike from campus. Altho, the field DOES have lights and I believe it is the only Philly school to play night games.

As TRhit said, Penn is an Ivy League school. Another definetly CITY school. I believe their coach has just been at Penn for two years. The baseball field if not located ON campus...is pretty darn close for a city school. Being an Ivy...you can not beat the education and prestige of a Penn education.

Another idea for you....if you are looking in the Philly and/or suburban area...you might want to look into West Chester University. It is a D2 (the others you mentioned are D1...so don't know if that is a criteria for you). It is a pretty large D2...about 15,000 students I believe...but in West Chester, PA....a little further out from Philly than Villanova. Sort of near King of Prussia. They are usually pretty competitive in their conference.
Ohcomeonblue,

Very interesting. My son signed w/ SLU in November and will be a fresehman there this fall...so, I guess our kids will see each other several games per/year.

LaSalle sounds similar to SLU in many respects. Life's a series of trade-offs...there are a lot of favorable aspects of going to school in/near a major metropolitan area, even if it means avoiding long, off-campus, night-time strolls.

Good luck to your son!
OhComeOnBlue,

If you look at SLU's web-site, it's clear that even the school isn't sure how they got that mascot name, or what it really is!!

SLU got off to a rough start. Troy State, a ranked team I think, swept 3 from the Billikens last weekend. Apparently, the Bills were never in the 1st game, getting only two hits in a 5-0 loss, but they lost each of the next two in the last inning.

I think SLU's losing something like 80% of their pitchers to graduation after this year. I don't know if our son will be "in the lineup" next year, or not. They told him they consider him a legitimate "two-way" prospect, saying that due to their pitching situation he'll certainly get mound time as a freshman (how much, of course, will depend on what he does with the chances he gets). However, they also said he'll have to compete and really earn it to get much time as a position player in his freshman year.

Anyway, I'd very much appreciate your scouting reports...feel free to send me PMs. Our family is already discussing (with my wife, maybe "negotiating" is the better term) our chances to attend a few of their out-of-town games next year...if we get to come to any w/ LaSalle, I'll let you know!!!
If you are interested in LaSalle I recommend that you attend the TPX showcase at Shippensburg. Coach Severio is very involved in the showcase and it's a good opportunity for him to observe your skills. Additionally you may want to attend the LaSalle prospect camp in the fall. Villanova also has 2 clinics: one in September and one in the Winter. Good Luck.
