pick off move

Question on a pick off move, I will try to describe as best as I can. R1, lefty pitcher is in the stretch position as he starts to come set he makes a snap throw but instead of stepping off the back he slides his front foot towards first base. Would this satisfy the distance and direction requirement? Is there anything wrong with this?

unless I'm missing something from the OP, sounds like a standard legal move to me...

the step forward towards first would satisfy distance and direction

He must also step ahead of the throw. A snap throw then a step would be a balk.
