We call picks to IF from the dugout. Catcher relays it to pitcher.

Same for us.  But we do it a little different.   We use a sign that tells the MIF:  After THIS pitch is thrown, look into the dugout on every ensuing pitch (to this batter) to see if we're giving the pick sign (which is:  I lean with my arm upward on the face of the dugout).

Two reasons:

--We can be obvious (loud) in attracting the IF's attention to give him the "look at me (later)" sign...because nothing happens immediately after the sign is given, therefore the opposing team doesn't connect the dots.

--It allows the MIF to "set up" the baserunner.

The MIF keeps looking in until we either give the pick, or the at-bat concludes, or the baserunner moves on,  or we actively wipe it off.
