DadCoach, you seem to have a lot of bad umps. Fire the umps and hire some competent ones. When the pitch strikes the batter, he gets first base. It doesn't matter whether it hits the ground. He gets first. Likewise, the batter can hit the ball after it hits the ground. If the ball is put in play, it's just like any other ball that is put in play.

What league are you in and where do you play? What umpires do you hire? I want to know so I can stay away.
Are they bad umps or just uninformed?

Is this a league of very young players (8-9 years old) that uses other very young kids (13-14 yo) to do the officiating. If so then you need to find a means to get them more educated.

Or are these umpires being provided by some umpires organization. If that is the case then I agree with TallUmp; you have a big problem.

Look on the bright side though; In the first scenario the ump got it half right. The ball IS dead.
