Just to stir things up some more...I found this in the Sherman Newspaper regarding a pitcher from Peaster (2A)whom Pottsboro beat this past weekend.

quote:
Peaster starter Chris Gutierrez threw a 124-pitch complete game to earn the win in Game 1 Thursday.

Saturday wasn’t nearly as kind to the Peaster senior. He lasted into the second inning, but was bounced before recording an out, lasting just 37 pitches after one day of rest.

As for Midland Lee, I've seen 3 guys throw for them and all 3 threw complete games when I was there vs. Franklin. In fact, their SS who is the #3 guy, was bringing it 88/89 in the 7th inning of his game.
From the NY Times article from yesterday

quote:
Wood was a sensation in his senior year at Grand Prairie, going 14-0 with an e.r.a. of 0.84. On June 1, 1995, the Cubs made Wood the fourth pick overall in baseball’s amateur draft. But for the moment, Wood was still a high-school pitcher under the tutelage of McGilvray. Two days after the draft, with Grand Prairie needing to sweep a doubleheader to get into the state tournament, McGilvray had Wood throw 146 pitches in the first game, then come back to start the second and throw 29 more pitches, for a mind-blowing total of 175 in a single day. Wood was the winning pitcher in both games, and actually won the second one with his bat when he hit a grand slam.

Not to be nit-picky but....

L.A. -- Is that a good thing for Midland Lee or a bad thing? Nothing in your post suggests one side or the other.

KD -- How was Wood credited with a win by throwing 29 pitches in game 2? Since he was a strikeout pitcher, it seems unlikely that he pitched 4 innings in only 29 pitches. Or maybe they rewarded him the win in sheer admiration. Smile

It's worked for them so far in the play-offs. Flynn has thrown a lot of pitches as of late and it may come back to haunt them. He does throw hard, but his fast ball has been flat lately, but he realizes this and won't leave it out over the plate or it's a bad thing: see Franklin who hit him well. Because of this he's throwing more off-speed stuff: curves and changes and both of those pitches are pretty darn good. Walton is a great #2 guy. He's got a nice loose arm and keeps hitters off balance with change ups at any time. His fastball can run in on a righty and cause big trouble if your sitting change.

I know I did not answer your question PD, but the high pitch counts recently can't be too beneficial to them. And only using those 3 could hurt them if neither of them are effective at any time. When I saw them I think they only had the bullpen going one time and it was in game 3, but they never made any changes. Nor have they made changes against Coppell or Martin. I guess their coach is going to ride this for the next one maybe two games. If Flynn wins their first game, I think they have a REAL good chance of winning it all with Walton. Their real weakness is that they will swing themselves out of a game at times by swinging at marginal pitches.

Nice scouting report. Dang I'm long winded!

My oldest son had the pleasure of going to bat against Kerry one time. He just stood there for all three pitches and never moved his bat. I asked him why he did not swing. He handed me the bat and told me to go try. I changed subjects after that.

If the parent's of the player nor the player are not complaining about the pitch count then, why should anyone else??

Hmmm... Maybe it was OK for the Cubs to complain (in regards to Kerry Wood) about a pitchers pitch count. Two days after they made him the fourth overall pick his moronic high school coach pitches him into the ground.... But, "why should anyone esle care"....right?

This time you could slant the argument towards the Arlington Martin vs. Midland Lee game where there was a pitcher that went 10 complete innings...

My son pitched in this game and after 6 innings he had right at 100 pitches and a 4-3 lead. Then we had the 52 min. lightning delay, he did not return and it may or may not have cost us that game but I for one was happy he didn't come back out.
They are all relative...half the post's on here reference innings, same thing with warm-up pitches being relavent. (pre-game and in between innings) you and I both know a very good local pitcher who spends 30 minutes and about 40 laboruos pitches just to get ready for a game.(thats relavent to me)

BTW..KG your post on pitch counts

excellent analogy, body builders are in a constant state of soreness (muscle re-building) they rely on excellent FORM to aviod injuries, IMO... almost ALL arm injuries are due to overthrowing (over-exurtion) and/or bad form/mechanics, useually both. (curveballs rarely are the cause) Thats not to say that I endorse overuse. just got to know the player/pitcher/situation.
