When a pitcher is left in a game (sent out into field after initial appearance) and then returns to game at end....is that one appearance or two in the stat books?
Sorry I do not have a definative answer for this, and as such you may want to post this in the scorekeepers forum....but I have looked into all the rule books I have and can not find a definative ruling.....
So here is my educated guess......I would say it would be considered one appearance.....he never left the game and I do not believe that credit for "appearance" has any "number of facing batters" criteria besides obviously one.......
if you find out different let me know. I am anxious to learn....
I'll go out on a limb & say 2 appearances .. for a couple reasons
he made his 1rst appearance, then relieved another pitcher
if when he returned, he earned a "save", you could figure from his stats (2 app) how it could be that (if) he was the starter & aslo earned the save ... otherwise without footnotes etc, it would look like a typo mistake
Bee, That makes some sense...I can see that....but the confusing thing I found was that if a replaced pitcher re-enters as the pitcher he can be credited with a win but not a save....NFHS rule 9-6-art 7 c-4
Since the rule book disallows him getting the save does it still consider it as his first appearance?..
willing to go with the concensus here.......hopefully there is a scoring reference book (like we have in umpiring) that clears up holes in the official rules....
thanks guys, this is fascinating....this particular pitcher actually pitched 1.2 innings, then went out into lf but had to come back in when 3 lefties were coming to bat and the closer was unable to get the last out. Pitcher's stats say 1 appearance even though he made 2 on the mound. Now what I wonder is if the closing pitcher was actually credited with an out (imagining only 1 or no outs) and then first pitcher returned to mound if THAT constitutes 2 appearances??? or is it always just one??? Not that it really matters I suppose but somewhat interesting. Thanks for the feedback...I will have to post on scorekeeper's forum. This pitcher was actually a mid reliever and then closed.
