Generally speaking if you’re going to pitch in college you can leave the bat at home. There are exceptions. The pitcher, if he is a proven college hitter or if he he’s being recruited as a hitter, stands a much better chance at batting. The size of the program has a lot to do with it too. The smaller the program the more apt you are to see two way players. That would be a great recruiting question in my opinion.

I believe Fungo's son did some of both at a big-time program...so as always, he's a great guy to listen too. I think his comment about the size/stature of the program is on-target...his son beat the odds on that one.

One other thing to consider...I believe my son (pitcher) has told me that it would be very tough to do both well due to the manner in which practices are conducted. Most that I have seen in the Pac-10 were DHs on days they didn't pitch. Not many play a position too.

My son's college coach had a good way of responding to this question when it came up in a recruiting context. His reply:

"If your (pitcher) son demonstrates that he can consistently be one of the top 10 batters on the team, we'll want him to hit, as well."

It was an honest response, as a handful of pitchers in his program have hit. What was embedded in his response, though, was the knowledge that it's extremely difficult to spend enough practice time to do both well at the major college level. Many high school pitchers are also among their team's best hitters; but, they haven't been faced with the demands of doing both well on the college level.

Son was recruited as a LHP/OF-UT player.
They the coaches, said he would see time on the mound out of the bull pen his freshman year.
And they were true to there word, 24 app. and no AB.
Also Acadamics played a part.
Do they have the time for doing both in College??

I was bummed, but Son told me to get over it.
I know it bugs him not to contribute at the plate.
Which would of been no problem for him.
And I have no rosed colored glasses on.
It's just hard to break into a concrete line up.
And there need for a LHP out of the Bullpen.

So as other's warned me last year cutter1,
Time will tell.

New year, new season, A lot of players Drafted.
Who knows what the future holds.
