Any thoughts on what is a good layoff for a pitcher?

My 09 son just completed his fall season and he was planning on not throwing for a few months. He plans to workout during the time off. There are some camps and showcases in December though and I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on how much time a pitcher should take off from throwing between seasons.

Make sure all the muscles are in the right place when there is time off--especially in the shoulder. Last year I took a month+ off, came back and felt worse than ever in my shoulder. Shut it down for a week, did a lot of shoulder placement exercises, and I felt as good as new.

In my opinion, mechanics, strength, and flexibility should be the focus in a "time off."
