So son (15) just started pitching towards the end of last year.   He is just starting now for hs.  Is it normal for the velo to be the same from end of one season and beginning of the next?  this is his first throwing he has done in a few months.  He is a position player first and foremost.  Pitching is just a side thing for him.

I would not get too worried about VELO as it is not unusual for it to stay constant over the off season. But I would also add that very serious players work all off season and not just as season starts.

Having said that I would add that I used to have a SS also until we realized that a team has 1 SS and 12 pitchers. What are the odds of u being that 1 guy?

@Dadof3, do not get caught up in chasing velo. And by all means do not let your son attend a velocity camp. Most of them are run by snake oil salesmen and they do more harm than good. I’m speaking from experience. Find someone that can teach solid mechanics. As your son matures, and gets bigger & stronger, the velo will show up. It’s a good idea for any player that can pitch to continue to do so. You never know when it will come in handy. As players move into college ball many find out (the hard way) that they aren’t college hitters. As @JucoDad said, being able to pitch is often the only way some players can continue to play. That was the case for me. It’s also the case for 3 of the top 14 pitchers at the Region 5 JuCo where I help coach. Since we are on this topic I will tell you the FB velo range of our top 14 guys. 4 of them are 90 mph plus and the other 10 are 87-89 mph. All have at least one good secondary pitch. Most have 2 good ones. McLennan almost always has the best arms in our Region and I’m sure they have at least 10 guys that are 90-95 mph. Region 5 is one of the most competitive JuCo regions in America and those numbers are very representative of what it takes to pitch there.

Thanks!  Coach said he has great command of all his pitches, so that was good to hear.

good knight, with regards to very serious,  he is very serious, but I chose (based off what I thought was best) for him to have time off of throwing.  Give his arm some time off.  Just because he is so young yet.

When my 2024 son was 14 his max FB was 72 at his first every PBR event.  He was a center fielder and pitched all of 5 innings his 13u and 14u summer.

His first bullpen this winter as an 18 year old he was 92-94 and T 95.  Trust the process, keep working and the velo will come.
