My son just had a pitching video shot. Should it include any radar readings? Will coaches he sends it to care, or are they just looking at fundamentals at this point? https://www.youtube.com/watch?...ture=em-upload_owner

If his velocity is anything what it looks like with the naked eye, I'd certainly have a radar gun in the picture. That's a nice pitcher you have there. A lefty with what looks like very good velocity and control and very nice off-speed stuff (great movement on the change even if it's a little too easy to pick up). Good luck.
I agree with Roothog. Tell us what the velo is, and we can opine yes or no, but it is better to include it. Early on, my son did not include it as his frame/plane, etc. looked great but velo was a little behind where it was worthy of mentioning. Also, add his height and weight to the intro. Finally, not sure if it was my computer muted or what, but why not include the sound of the ball pounding the glove. No music or other stuff; just plain old leather on leather.
I hadn't even noticed the height and weight were missing. However, that brings up a question I wanted to ask. I'm putting together a new video for root jr. and recently was thinking about the whole height thing. He's now a legit 6' 4 1/8" (on a doctor's scale in bare feet). Given tendencies for many to fudge that stat a bit, would it be totally ridiculous, lame, or maybe just humorous to actually add in about three seconds of him standing on the scale showing his height? He wanted me take a picture at the Dr.'s office and wanted me to add it to the video. My immediate reaction was that it seemed too awkward, but on second thought maybe not. I've often wondered if they see him listed at 6' 4" and just assume it's really more like 6' 2."

Thank you roothog66 and BucsFan. He was gunned early this year at 75-76 fb, 55-56 cb and 66-67 cu. He's not working with a strength coach to develop more leg and core strength which we hope will help with his velo. Good idea adding height and weight (6'1", 170lbs), and adding the pop of the mitt! Thanks again

I honestly thought he looked faster than that. I wouldn't add a radar gun at this point. He has nice stuff. Get him some interest with the hope that by the time they get around to seeing him, he's added 8mph or so from the work he's doing. I'd also suggest that he pick up the pace on the curve, even if it means less movement. That thing needs to get at least into the high 60's.

In that case, I would not include the radar gun/velo. It is not a huge deal. They'll need to see/verify live anyway. The velo # is not yet his strength, if you will. All else looks promising, though.

Do it! I like it! Who cares what others have/have not done. It makes it legit. I think coaches like "out of the box" stuff like that. I know a big time D1 kid who went to SEC school and had 30 offers. In his video, he showed a clip of him taking BP in the snow and then a snowball fight with his brother.
Same thing my son was told with regard to his curveball when he was a HS soph....it was just too slow. He picked up the velocity on the curve...and even after losing some movement found he was getting a lot more outs due to the speed increase. Also, I think I would probably show a couple pitches from the windup

+1 on curve ball (along with Buckeye, too). It is a monster 12/6 break which is great (shows he can spin it),but the goal needs to be same arm speed on curve as on FB. Tighter spin which will mean less but sharper break. Basically, the theory is this: a big, slow break will be REALLY effective in HS but better hitters have to much time identify and adust to the curve ball as you move up the ranks. Then there is Clayton Kershaw who has both!

That's another battle! He was never, and I do mean never, a wind up pitcher. He is just so uncomfortable with the foot work. Maybe we'll work on it this winter, just doing the footwork and motion, no throws for awhile.

Thanks for the input. Lots to work on this winter.
Yeah, but lots to work with, too!! LHP - check. Over 6' and not done growing - check. Smooth delivery - check. Nice movement on 2 offspeed pitches - check. Projectible - check. Many would like to be in his/your shoes. Don't worry about the wind up. IMO, anyway. A lot of coaches don't care and think working from stretch only at young age is fine.
Your son has more velocity in him already. Watch how his front knee leaks forward upon landing. Then watch his forearm flyout. Both of these actions tend to reduce velocity....
Compare your son's video to some of current MLB LHPs and you should see what I am talking about. One cheap tool to do that is Coaches Eye.....not perfect...but cheap!

Thank you Scott, I'll look into that. I appreciate the feedback.
Just another somewhat unsolicited observation... he has a distinctly different arm slot with his change up as compared to the FB and CB. FB/CB are quite high and over the top while CU is dropped to a more traditional slot. It is generally desirable to have the same arm slot for all pitches for better deception. I also think the CU from that higher arm slot will have some real nasty movement, assuming that slot feels natural to him. Something you may want to ask his P coach about if it hasn't already been addressed.

Thank you, I appreciate all observations! There is much to learn. I did notice his arm slot, in fact almost his entire delivery, changed for the CU. That is definitely something we will work early next year in preparation for the Spring/Summer season. Thanks again.
