Final: Plano West 10, Carroll 8

Southlake Carroll rallied in the fourth inning, but could not repeat the effort in the sixth and seventh frames as Plano West defeated the Dragons 10-8 Saurday to claim the 2008 UIL Class 5A state baseball title at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock.

Trailing by a run to start the sixth inning, the Wolves (40-2) took a 9-7 lead as Carroll pitchers Ethan Cunningham and Tanner Toal struggled to throw strikes. Plano West had just one hit in the inning - a Kale Kiser run-scoring double - but had three walks and a sacrifice fly to help get three runs. Carroll (23-19) cut the deficit to 9-8 with a Zack Bellenger single bringing home Ronnie Mitchell.

However the Dragons left two runners on. Nobody reached base in the bottom of the seventh. Still, the Tarrant County school had an impressive 2007-08 school year. Carroll also won girls team titles in cross country and golf. Trailing 5-1 after the Wolves’ Donald Plant blasted a 430-foot shot over the bullpen in left centerfield, Carroll took a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Carroll got two runners on, and Vincent Winter followed with a bunt that Plano West pitcher Andrew Blum fielded and threw wide to third base, scoring Toal to make it 5-2. The Dragons got another run, ending Blum’s day, and tied the game off reliever Drew Johnson before an out was recorded.

When it was over, the Dragons took a two-run lead and batted around. Plano West had as many errors (five) as runs at that point. Wolves miscues included a dropped ball on a throw to the plate, a missed tag on a sure-fire double play, and a throw that pulled the first baseman off the bag.

The Wolves cut the deficit to 7-6 in the fifth, with Jason Coats coming home on a Tyler Bruce double.

I should say that I was going for West the whole game, but did anyone else leave that game feeling West was not only outplayed but didn't "deserve" to win? Not to take anything away from Plano West and what they've achieved, as the great teams find ways to win games they probably shouldn't. But my question is, did anyone else watch the game from the West side and leave feeling "guilty?"
Hornsr1, If I were one of the teams that the Dragons defeated to get to the championship game, I might be offended by your "average" label. If I were a Dragon player, parent or coach, I might question your baseball smarts. But as a fan of HS ball, I didn't see an "average" team playing West yesterday. Average teams and their fans were watching on FOX or at another game...
3and2, I applaud your comments on horns statements. We have friends on both teams and played against them. Congatulations to both on a great season.
I would like to remind hornsr1 to keep everything in perspective, though. A 5A school is one that has over what? 2178 students. SLC has about 2400 and Plano West, what close to 3500. The larger the talent pool, the better the opportunity.
Both teams represented their schools and Districts well.

Can anyone back those stats up? I always thought that Southlake had the most kids in all of 5A just because it was a one high school city unlike how Plano has 3. Just curious.
If you add up the numbers for SLC, they have 3212 HS students on two campuses. West has 5383 on three campuses: West and its two feeders - Jasper and Shepton. I am not sure how the Plano system works. Some of the underclassmen may go to different senior highs, but they are listed as West feeders on the Plano ISD website.

I would like to applaud the comments made by the Plano West players going into the championship game and after they had won the game about the Carroll team. They showed a lot of class which I hadn't seen or read too much of after most of the other playoff games. They are truly respectful young men & very well coached. Congratulations on being State Champs!
A lot of people love to hate SLC due to all the success they have had on the field of competition. Truth of the matter, from Larry Hughes to each kid, they were a class act. I didn't want to have to play them because I wasn't sure PW was as good as them. Championship was a great game with a lot of emotional up and downs for both teams. Congrats to both schools.

FYI, don't know about SLC, but PW graduates this morning. Last weekend during the State Tournament, a lot of graduation parties and events going on that kept people from traveling down to Austin. My opinion is that start of school in late August affected attendance more than anything. Late start means later finish and later graduation dates. These events conflict with State tournament. Just an opinion.
Fans will always smack talk...especially on boards like this. However, both teams (SLC & PW) showed a lot of class throughout the season and playoffs.

That comes from good parenting and good coaching...so congrats parents and coaches. Be as proud of your kids because of the way they conducted themsleves throughout the season as you are because they were successful on the field.

I think both programs have a bright "immediate" future over the next few years as both return many key players.
Kirk, I think your theory about graduation parties/end-of-year events depressing game attendance has a lot of merit. I know that in the regional finals, there were only about 500 fans at Reagan's games as opposed to 1500 a week or two before. Final exams, graduation ceremonies, grad. parties all kept people from coming to the games. This year's academic schedule has been pushed back and it's a shame that it adversely affected attendance for what sounds like a very exciting game.

Congratulations again on your victory!
