The rule in HS is the same as most youth leagues, Slide or attempt to avoid contact.
In your question it doesn't give enough information to really answer specifically. A runner doesn't have to slide at any base but if he does it must be a legal slide. He can't just barrel a catcher, this could be a malicious contact and an ejection. By the same token he can stay standing and try to avoid the contact, have contact and be fine. It is a case by case basis.

The "must slide" rule I have seen means at every base thus players are required to say for instance slide into second base even if the play has already been made, the bag has already touched.By interpration this means slide anyway

I have also seen plays at home where is the "must slide" rules was in effect their would have been an unnecessary collision between runner and the catcher
The reason "must slide" rules are dangerous and stupid is it forces a player to do the most dangerous thing in baseball. As already stated many times a runner could go around a fielder, avoid the contact and there still be a throw at the play. There isn't a national organization that I know of that requires a slide. If Pony, LL, HFHS,NCAA, AAU, Dixie, BR, and any other number of sactioning bodies don't think it's necessary then why should a small group of locals think they would know better. Also, if more umpires would call obsruction, interference, and malicious contact the way it is written this wouldn't be a question.
