He ends up grounding out. This occurred late in the game and his team ended up losing by one run. Seems like a selfish move on the player's part. The coaches didn't utter a peep.

The umpires also messed up. He gets first. He doesn't want to go, he can go to the bus and his sub can run. Despite the use of the term "award," there is no option.
Matt nailed it. What sport were they actually playing? Once the batter does not go to first upon being hit, then it sure as heck is no longer a legit baseball game. This just makes no sense, unless it was a scrimmage.

He still gets his participation trophy, though, amirite?
Gosh, I hope there's more to this story. Something like, "PU thought he heard the pitch hit the batter's shirt, but then the batter and the catcher both said the sound was the ball off the catcher's glove."
Otherwise, there's lots of clavinball aspects on all sides of this.

I can see the coach of the kid who got hit not saying anything...they may have wanted the kid to hit....but what about the other team's coach....and more importantly the umpires? You can't choose whether or not to take first
Ok this is bizarre. Who is this kid, and how was this allowed to happen LOL? This is not an option, people...
Sure its not optional but if the hitter/coaches talk the umpire out of hbp who is to complain?
BTW if coaches didn't have a problem, its not a problem. Not sure what level of play this was or how good the player is but I personally would rather have my best hitter swing away then have him take a walk/hbp in close game.
Was his first name Domingo?
The OP hopefully can clarify - his post implies that the ump ruled HBP, but the batter "declined" to take first. I just find that funny, as there is nothing to accept or decline. If the call was HBP, but then the batter or his coach persuaded the ump to reverse the call, that is a different story.
As long as ball 4 is still honored, the wheels should still stay on the baseball wagon
OP did his job and just needs to do it again. Real Baseball
