We played a high school in VA in a Varsity/JV doubleheader. We had five JV players appear in the Varsity game. One only ran and another was the defensive player for the designated hitter. We had a JV game scheduled afterward. The umpires said we were not allowed to allow the players who appeared in the Varsity game to play, because they had played in the Varsity game. I thought it was only a Virginia rule, but the umpire said it was a national rule. We would not have had enough to play, so fortunately for me, the ump. allowed us to play. We have a senior/sophomore Varsity ball club, with only four juniors (two who play JV) in our program, and only one of them is a serious contributor. These sophomores play Varsity and JV, so they can get more reps. and continue to learn, because although they are talented enough to play Varsity, they are still learning and developing. They are fortunate that there are no juniors or seniors ahead of them at their positions. Regarldess of the talent, I believe freshman and sophomores should play JV (if no freshman team). Have any of you heard that players could not appear in a Varsity game and then play in a JV game that follows? Also, what are your thoughts on players playing both Varsity and JV? Thanks.
I have a love and passion for this game, and I want to be a great coach!!!

I'm not sure the particular rules regarding scrimmages, but I'm almost 100% positive that the VHSL rule is 20 games (JV and/or varsity combined) per player in the regular season, and no varsity/JV on the same day. I have seen sophomores and freshman who were on varsity be sent down to JV for a game to get innings if the varsity didn't have a game on the same day for whatever reason. But those were guys who probably had several varsity games where they saw no action, so it wouldn't become an issue.

One other note regarding Virginia rules (for public schools at least)- only sophomores, freshmen, and 8th graders are eligible for JV.
Here in CO. (CHSAA) we have FROSH, JV, and Varsity.

FROSH (C-Squad) = freshman and/or sophomores
JV = Jr. and below
Varsity = Sr. and below

We play a 19 game season which = 133 innings so a player can play at any level, up or down, as long as they don't exceed 133.

A pitcher may appear in no more than 12 innings in any three consecutive calendar days and no more than 70 innings in the 19 games.

No restriction as far as playing Varsity and JV on the same day.
I'm also in Colorado and Boneyard is correct. At a small school like mine we average 6-7 kids that are actually JV the rest play some varsity. It is not uncommon for at least 1 varsity starter playing in a JV game. Most schools in the area will play their varsity kid in a secondary position and bat them at the bottom of the line up. Last weekend we played a v/JV double header the other team was down in numbers and had to use 5 of their varsity starters in the JV game.
