When I coached I was glad I had baseballs transportation and umpire fees. I hear from some prents what they shell out for "high school" and I am amazed. Of course the priorities have changed. Everykid has to have his own uniform with his name(we used to turn unis in at the end of the season) Batting practice jersey all the gizmos that supposedly make you a better player. I used to have a fungo and a bucket of balls. worked wonders. cheap too.
Sure we can add up all the fees and equipment. Especially nowadays with gas through the roof, but can you really put a price on helping your son fulfill his dream and see it to reality? We have 4 sons, all able to play organized ball next year (pray for us) and we will be busy and split but there is nothing like seeing your oldest being lifted by teammates for his walk off homerun, the look on his face when a coach commends him, or hearing your youngest chomping at the bit to play like his oldest. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely!
BBfam : Our family had four playing last summer. Whew!

My best advice is to lower the balance on your credit card of preference BEFORE the season begins and don't try to 'map it out ' too much in advance because it all is in flux CONSTANTLY!

It was wild but sure worth it all!

Much success to all of you next season.

TRhit : Many in our community think our family is nuts and by in large they're right. My response to them is it's not a bad thing to be nuts, broke, having fun,and being together as a family.

We wouldn't have it any other way...honest!
I've spent a lot on baseball (and still spend invaluable hours of my life playing baseball with my boys), but have also spent a bit on education -- books about paying for college, school rankings, what students say about their school, etc. Just signed up for a service at collegeboard.com called "MyRoad" which allows a student to take a personality and interest inventory - and they get feedback on majors/careers that will be of interest to them. Plan on paying for SAT prep. Just bought him a better guitar..........

And now my daughter of 8 wants a mandolin.....

Yep, life's expensive! Whether I'm helping to create a college player or beyond, or a ringer on the company softball team, it's all good.
As you can tell by my id dad4boys, I can relate to having 4 kids playing sports.

The way I look at it is this. When and if my boys decide to return some of what they got to the community by coaching in the rec leagues etc. every dollar I have spent on instruction will be well spent when they teach the next Cy Young winner how to throw. Just think how good the kids would be today if our dads had spent money on instruction for us, and we could have passed that information on.
