If they did it, they should pay. But it looks like politics at it's worst to me. To grandstand for reelection at the expense of these kids is terrible.
Considering the notoriety this case attracted almost immediately, is it all that unusual that a couple of grand jury indictments got pushed through? This particular prosecutor is one year removed from traffic court. Reports out of the area confirm that this is BIG time about his political future. If you think he isn't playing to what he believes is his constituency, I think you're being a bit gullible. This case isn't being tried in Chicago or NY. Remember the movie with Joe Pesce, My Cousin Vinny? That's what I think is going on down in Durham.
Is this starting to sound like the sacrificial lamb scenario? When this plays out in a year or so, and if these two young men are acquitted, I only hope that they will be able to resume their lives absent any lasting stigma. I've been intrigued about this case since it broke, and without any DNA evidence, this prosecutor better have something pretty conclusive if he expects to convict. Then again, if he puts on a good show, he may still win re-election, which would be a travesty.
