I'm 16 years old. I would like to know what the average pop time and mph for a catcher my age would be.I just want to see where I am in the mix. My best pop time is 1.78 but my average is 1.90. I think I need to improve my mph because it is 77 mph. Please I need some advice.

Who is doing the timing? A pop time of 1.9 is really good but a 1.7 is really REALLY good.
Your times aren't correct. They're MLB times.
HS catchers who throw accurate 2.2's in games are hard to steal on.
(assuming that the pitcher is quick enough to the plate, etc. etc. etc)
Pop times if accurate are outstanding. You must be very quick. Velocity @ 80+ should do the trick. Welcome aboard & best of luck to you.
Your pop times are extremely good (I'm guessing your dad or coach timed them in a non game setting?)your velocity will improve over time, but is not bad for your age. Keep working hard, it's the only thing you control 100%. Good luck.
Your pop time is not going to be a problem. Your arm, if these times are at all accurate, won't be a limit on playing at the next level.
But simulated throw downs are just a proxy measure to screen out players. There is so much more to catching. The higher you advance, the less things like timed simulated pop times matter.
Your challenge over the next couple years will be to do what you can to make sure that the other four baseball skills are also not going to keep you from playing at the next level.
Ok, the #1 2016 pop time at Perfect Game events last summer was 1.84, recorded at the South Underclass Showcase. This was the only time below 1.90 they recorded in the country, and only 12 were below 2.00. These kids are throwing mid-70s to low 80s to achieve these times. The same data showed an improvement of 0.05-0.15s for the 2015s (basically, the best time improved by 0.05, and the times between #1 and #12 compressed by 0.10).
So, if even close to accurate these are Team USA-level times.
Nelson,
as others have noted those times and velocity are outstanding. I haven't seen video, but from the showcase PG suggests you can improve your footwork and that you are throwing over a stiff front leg. This is fundamental stuff and can improve your release time and throwing velocity. You need to stay low through the throw and follow through towards second base. There are some catching experts on this site that can give you some very specific things to do and drills to work on. Congrats on your performance so far and good luck.
For the record...
The #1 rated catcher entering this year's draft is from the San Diego area. He recorded the best pop time and best velocity (1.73/91mph) we have ever had. Like Bryce Harper, he was a PG All American, and might end up playing the outfield. He has hit 40 home runs in high school. Here is his profile, some things won't appear unless you are a subscriber.
For the record...
Jerry, you have a new Dialog.
Nelson,
Achieving a 1.78 poptime @ 77mph means that your pop-to-release time must be at or very near the irreducible minimum of ~.65 seconds. Great job with that!
Btw, what is your standing crop-hop velocity?
Nelson,
without video it is hard to make suggestions on how to improve your velocity. Someone stated you throw against a stiff front leg....unless you are throwing from a running start (mainly OF), the stiff leg is good....
It may just be that your velo will increase with age. If you have recent video please post...would be much easier to comment on mechanics with video. Catcher velocity could be a function of the following: front leg instability, bad arm cock, front glove side action, strength, lack of torque (little hip/shoulder rotation), etc...without a video it's just speculation.
obviously you move quick, if your velocity can increase, you'd be at the top of the food chain.
(First Post! Lurking for a year or two)
I am also a 2016. Personally I would like to think that I have a a quick release time (.65-.75 depending on placement of pitch) and my velocity behind the plate is on average anywhere from 78-80 mph, but I only throw high 1.8's to mid 1.9's. I don't want to sound like a doubter but as someone asked, who is timing you? Is this you:http://www.perfectgame.org/players/playerprofile.aspx?ID=344293
If so, it looks like your almost turned sideways (may be the camera angle) but, if your not cheating, you get rid of it very fast! As we (2016's) grow so will our arm strength. Just keep at it and hopefully I'll meet you at a PG event in the future
It was just one time that I get the 1.78 and the timing was done by my all star game coach. That day I feel great and my arm was on fire maybe that why I get that pop time because I mostly throw low 1.8's 1.93.
That is my profile and yeah I hope we meet at PG.

Nelson,
Your Catcher video is mislabeled as "IF". I would suggest that you contact PG to have it corrected. You can find a Contacts link at the bottom of their Home webpage.
