Are pop times at PG showcases done manually?
looks like a lot of fast pop times at the showcase today. Quick finger? Or just a good group. Tons of 1.8-1-9.

I'm not sure, but there is an awful lot of "cheating" going on with pop times. Look at the videos and you'll see kids jumping up and already moving their feet when the ball hits their glove. I really think pop time as typically measured has become close to worthless as an evaluation tool.
Well, i don't know much about catching but take a look here. actual MLB data on steals. I'm not so sure you have 1.8-9 times at a PG event very often.
My son is a catcher in college. Most every coach that recruited him never mentioned pop times. The school he is at the coach said that's not even top 5 in terms of importance. Receiving #1 blocking #2. Athleticism and hustle#3 leadership/smarts. Then arm strength etc. Doesn't mean shit if you are quick to throw if you cant frame a pitch or block a 85 to 90 plus slider in the dirt.

Yes, it would make sense that MLB players were superior to HS kids. However, 10 players posted sub-1.90 pop times in the current PG Fall Top Prospect National Showcase. To me, this calls into question the test, or at least the testing methodology.

Showcase pop times are better than game pop times on average since there isn’t a batter in the box to deal with.
And like previously stated, these guys are practically standing up when the ball comes. Worthless measurement.
1.8 pop times do not happen in game situation. If a catcher can be 2.0 on the bag then they will get the job done. Most of the showcase pops, as already mentioned, have some element of exaggeration. Many of these throws are erratic as the player is standing up before they catch the ball or are thrown from inside the batters box which would never happen. If the guy with the 1.8 can’t find the bag he is no different than the 6.3s 60yd guy who can’t hit or get on 1st to even steal 2nd.
In reality it is a measurable that is evaluated but certainly not the most important.

One of my son's first showcases was an indoor showcase. He couldn't get over how the "best" pop time catchers (those that made the showcase "list")were catchers who didn't throw anywhere near the second base bag..throws were way overthrown into the outfield. Son said if that was done in an actual game he'd be on third!
