25 years ago next Wednesday, I loaded a plane at DFW to fly to Kingsport, TN to meet the Bluefield Orioles where they had already started their season, to start my pro career. A day I'll never forget!! I can remember my mom and girlfriend (now my wife) crying there eyes out as I boarded the plane!

Zach will like Bluefield alot. It's a beautiful town. The entire area behind the outfield fence is a big mountain. The town is great and full of wonderful people.

Most of the bus rides aren't really too long! Good luck to him!!

Followed closely the area players that were taken in the draft. Got me wondering... which players decided to forego college and give it a shot? (to somewhat temper the sarcasm... yes, I know that Kershaw took the $2,000,000+)

Has Kershaw officially signed? I haven't seen any publication saying he has. Just curious!

This coupled with the Channel 8 salute to the Mavs season has touched my heart and showered the fields at my house. Someone get me a tissue.

Congrats to all, including the DMN honorees!

OP -- what did you sign for in 1981? Smile

PD,

You're gonna laugh when I tell you this. I was the 76th pick in the draft, which today, would be a second round pick. In 81, it was late in the 3rd round!! Anyway, my bonus was a whopping...........now, remember, don't laugh..........$26,000. The #1 pick in the draft that year got a whopping $100,000.

We met the Oriole scout at a hotel in Houston after I pitched in the All-Star game on June 20th. We told him that we wanted $65,000. He called back a few days later and told us that they could only go $26,000. I really wanted to sign, so we agreed to that amount and the rest is history. I spent most of the money on a car and phone bills calling back home.

All I can say is...either I'm real old...or times have changed a little! Something tells me it's alot of both!!

It's pretty cool that Zach is a left handed pitcher, 3rd round pick out of HS, picked by the O's and is headed to Bluefield!! I remember all that as if it happened yesterday! I hope he can do well, STAY HEALTHY, and make it to the big leagues! That would be awesome for him and his family and the O's.

Incredible how lives can change overnight like this. I'm really happy for this family as I understand their lives have been a struggle for some time.

Just look what doing things right and hard work will do for a kid and his family.

Congratulations Mr. Kershaw, and good luck.

Well, OP -- $26K -- that's alot of Lucky dogs! I look forward to hearing more about your experiences one day soon.

PD,

Sounds great......sounds like we will be watching the same games soon with both our boys on the field together. Wink We're both very excited!!

I won't be able to go to Georgia with him this time, so will you please keep an eye on him for me while he's there? I would appreciate it!
