It’s not common. But, yes. It’s usually a faux young, inexperienced dad with a faux young stud son. The poster makes absurd comments about how great his preteen stud is going to be. Then he sits back and watches the reaction. The reason it’s so frowned on is there are regulars who make an effort to provide reasonable, helpful answers.

Another thing that ticks people off is after accumulating a bunch of responses that aren’t the confirmation of his views the poster was looking for the poster deletes the thread. Once again this is after several people make an effort to provide an honest response.

I didn’t  think the referenced thread was fake. A lot of dads of the first kid playing are looking for answers.

OMG there have been some doozies!

My favorite is the "wealthy dad" who wanted to know the best state for weather to live for baseball so he could buy a house there and build a full size field next door for his son to practice on. He said he had a jet to fly around to tournaments so location was not important. Classic.

Or, years ago, we had this guy who would post under several different "handles"...he was a "pot stirrer"...sometimes a doozy of a "troll" will cruise thru...Every now & then, there might be a "contrarian", just looking to start a war...Not often, though...

Those of us who've been here a while remember "the eye", he had several aliases...and in his mind, his son was the second coming of _______________. You can fill in the blank...Those type folks are exposed eventually, & lose any/all credibility.

Sadly that maybe my all time favorite thread on this site. I laughed for days over that one.

I know a wealthy dad that moved next door to the head coach.

I know another guy that built a full size field in his back yard.

Both kids played D1.  So, these people actually exist, well, except for the jet part, maybe.

As with any internet board there are trolls.

The part of the post that raised the red flag for most people was "also there are 35 or more baseball games which seems too many for an 11 yr old. The travel team will play 3 or more tournaments which is a major concern since the team may play 2 games in a day thus burning through pitchers. "

Many of our kids have played 20+ tourneys, he's talking about 3.  He also showed concern for burning through your pitchers, over a 2 game day.  These are flags that a poster is just here to stir stuff up......BUUUUUT......it's also a red flag that we have a brand new parent to travel ball who doesn't know what is normal.  That is why some people posted real answers even while they questioned the validity of the question. Had he come back and said something about a 10 year old blowing their elbow out after playing in 3 games in a year only throwing 40 mph, he would have been identified as a troll.

Personally, I actually hope that the guy worried about "too many games" was real...for purely selfish reasons: it made me (a baseball guy, but entirely clueless about the post-high school baseball world) feel just a little bit less ignorant. I've been coaching youth travel ball (11u-15u) for a long time, including my son once he got old enough...but I had never even thought about the next level (had expected the boy to remain football-focused). This site has been an invaluable resource!!!
