I’m intentionally keeping this separate from the posts on the post season being contaminated by the NCAA, selection committee, etc.
In my experience, it is exasperating and truly without reward to focus other than on the players. I learned that in 2002 when our son’s college team was given an ultimatum about 90 minutes after their beloved assistant coach was found dead in his room just before a second round game was to be played. The ultimatum: be on the field in 60 minutes or forfeit.
Missing in the appropriate discussion about the mess which is the NCAA is the stories about the players, one of which is the amazing series of MJ Metz of Duke.
MJ is a post graduate transfer from D3 Trinity (TX) University. He is another example of the incredible talent evaluation skills of Coach Scannell. Last year MJ was competing in the D3 National Championships.
This year he became a major player for Duke but at the regional hosted by Coastal Carolina, MJ could only DH. He tore an ACL in the ACC postseason tournament.
Hitting with a massive brace on the injured knee, MJ hit 3 HRs in the opening game, another in the Regional clinching win and was named the Regional MVP.
