I was watching a game today and this is what happen. Bottom of the 6th and the pitcher got on base. The coach put in a pinch runner for him. they took the lead. Top of the 7th the pitcher re-entered and went to the mound. the other coach said he cant pitch. the umps talked about it and agreed so he was put at 1st base. i thought as long as no one else pitched he could go back in and pitch.

High School? Sounds like a courtesy runner and an inexperienced umpire.

Even if it was an actual pinch-runner, a pitcher can return to pitch after being replaced offensively, if he has re-entry eligibility.

Yep. Still leaves us with an umpire without a clue.

Right. The only time the "can't re-enter to pitch" rule matters is if a new pitcher takes the mound and he hasn't pitched to a full batter.

Or if his replacement requires more than eight warm-up pitches.

*nod* Or he was removed because the coach has already used his three conferences.

I guess there are more than one. Smile
