There will be some more educated answers than mine, but obviously major/minor leaguers work out the day of games because they have no choice. As for whether it's ok for someone still in school (what do you mean by school? I'm assumming high school, but I don't know), I can't speak to whether it's a good idea or not. You may want to try posting in the Strength and Conditioning forum as well.
Minor leaguers workout 3 times a week, including the morning of the night game. The difference is that they are working under the supervision of a trainner and the exercises they are allow to the day of the game, will depends on position, actual physical conditions, particular area need to improve, and other conmsiderations.
Patty,

When I was in high school we always had games right after school, like at 3pm. I would usually always work out after the games and never before. This kept me strong and I was never tight before games. Once I got into college, we would work out in the mornings as we do now in pro ball and, as Racab said, we always did it under supervision.

As you go along playing ball, you will realize that it really is impossible to make gains in strength during the season, so your goal should always be to MAINTAIN your strength throughout.
