I was able to stop by Moody tonight and see Moody take on Ray. Last year Moody was ranked 1 in the state and Ray was ranked 3 in the state and when these two meet it is always thrilling. This was a well played game and neither team had all their players but both had a large majority of them. Although neither team threw their best pitchers, a couple of players stood out to me as players to watch for this year. There were 4 Division 1 signees in this game. Ray has 3 with Kenneth Avila- Northwestern, Trey Crain- Rice and James Tankersley to UTSA. Moody had their lone signee in Danny Grande to University of Oklahoma.
For Moody I felt that Ramsey Gonzales had a heck of a game with the stick and did not look to bad pitching either. Other players who played well were Andrew Perez, Joey Mendoza, and Jacob Perales looked great on the hill. Moody looked pretty good defensively but I think the key to them this year will be if the sticks can come around.
For Ray I felt that the most promising prospects looked to be Kenneth Avila and Trey Crain. Both of these 2 have recently signed and they both looked good. Avila had an absolute gun from shortstop and smoked a couple of balls while hitting. Crain is just a beast and his swing looked good and infield looked strong. I think these 2 are the key to Ray's success this year. Players who I thought would perform better were James Tankersley and Jon Irvine. Jon Irvine was ejected for cussing early in the game and so Ray did not have him.
Overall it was a good game and the matchup between these 2 teams this year will be exciting. Both will probably be ranked in the top 10 in the state. I think Ray has more talent but Moody is a much better base running team and plays with tons of heart. I cant wait till they square off at Cabaniss!!! GO MOODY MAGIC!!!!!!!!!!!
