OK guys and girls I've been following this site for some time and now my son is preparing for the freshman year.

With your experience on Texas HS ball at the 5A level, what would you recommend for a good fall/winter prep before tryouts early next year?

He has been playing on tournament teams for years now but I was thinking on focusing on lessons and individual work on hitting, fielding, long toss instead of the usual fall team tournament games as usual. I usually find the fall teams ... well shall we say generally less competitive.

Knowing what you know now, what would you do to help your son?

Thanks in advance and I'm looking forward to being more active here in the future. By the way, I'm in the Houston area.

Ditto on the above:

1. Get into offseason baseball program/class if your HS offers it.

2. As a Freshman, playing on your HS Fall Off season school team is a must, if offered.

3. If no offseason/baseball/workout program/class is offered and your coach is big into weight training, get going on that and I would also suggest (in addition to a lot of BP) is getting into a good running program. If your school offers a Fall Offseason Track program then I would suggest adding that to your class schedule that way you can be conditioning all Fall with running and weight training and best of all you can use it as your PE credit.

And finally,,,,,,,,,Enjoy your first HS baseball season, as a parent of a Senior I can tell you it will goooooo by quicker than any stage thus far so....4 Years = a Blink of an Eye.

Also, remember it is HS baseball and your coaches have to work with what they have been given unlike Select Baseball. Also, if you want to avoid some of the political elements (bleacher banter) I suggest learning (if you don't already know how to do it)how to operate the scoreboard. By doing the scoreboard I find that it does take you out of the "social" element of the program but by doing so you will find that you are totally involved in the game and you miss out on a lot of the "Junk".......You can get the social at Booster Club meetings.....

GOOD LUCK and I hope your son has a successful tryout and a great Freshman Season and welcome to HS BASEBALL!

Make sure you know when the tryouts are for next summer's summer team and who they are.

The bbi web site lists lots of clubs. The top clubs are Tigers, DMustangs, FW Cats, DBat, Marshals but there are a lot of other good programs, Dallas Panthers , Texas Tribe and Arlington A's just to name a few.

Your summer team is very important to prepare your son for his HS season.

My son was an incoming freshman last year and we had no idea that summer tryouts started in the fall....the Tigers 15 is having a tryout for next year in two weeks...

We missed the first couple of rounds of tryouts and ended up scrambling to get on a club in Feb and that was late.

Don't rely on other parents it gets very competitive for spots, it is up to you to get your son seen by the right clubs early.

Good Luck.

All responses were very helpful.

Before school ended, the HS had an opportunity to meet the HS coaches for the upcoming freshmen going into the athletic programs. The Baseball coach indicated the "off season" baseball was no big deal and encouraged him to play other sports as most in the "off Season" baseball program are cut and did not make the team. This coach, at the fresh/soph team is also a football coach. He asked what other sports he excelled in and we indicated basketball. He seemed to encourage non-specialization of sports the freshman year only and after that....pick a sport, unless he is an exceptional athelete. He also said that they do not have any "pre-high team" and warned some dads may put something together and call it that but they, like many schools, do not attend or care about those "programs". He said just to play a lot of ball, learn to hit the opposite field, learn to hit with a -3 bat. Their decisions are during the tryouts after football season.

The basketball coach said the same thing but really encouraged the schools off season basketball program and said to consider a fall baseball program away from from school if he desired. The basketball has a lot of sprinting and the conditioning would be good. He signed up for the off-season basketball (his second sport) because other friends that had off-season baseball last year said the coaches never came around...???

He has also gone to the summer baseball camps this coach has held the past two years. I also think this helps the coaches see and recognize him.

All in all, as mentioned form you, this is going to be very competitive and we are looking for the challenge.

Anyway, glad I asked and it appears to be timely. We will enter a good fall/summer baseball program in the Houston area, regular hitting, lessons, good work ethic and as mentioned....tryout begins NOW!

Oh yes, I will certainly be supporting this site. Awsome, knowledgable participants. Have a good fall folks!
