Michael,

I just found out that the Bedford-Central scrimmage Friday is cancelled. I don't know if that was ever officially rescheduled or if that was just rumor. It was originally supposed to be today, and then there was talk of it Friday, but now I hear that's off. Also, Shawn thought Bedford was scrimmaging Merrimack Wednesday. But I was just told that is JV, not Varsity. Anyway, Bedford still has Kennebunk at home Tuesday and they're at Bow Thursday.
North got cancelled today against Andover High but they were outdoors on the fields at North for practice.
Pre-season games are:
4/2 Friday-Tyngsboro, Ma @ North Field 3:00pm
4/3 Saturday-Bow @ North Field *changed from 12:00pm to 10:00am)
4/6 Tuesday-Hollis/Brookline @ North Field 3:30pm
No Holman games till season starts.

I'll be at North today. If anybody else is planning on going, I'll be the one behind the camera wearing the AB fleece!

That Wednesday game is for the JVs vs. Bedford, **** I wanted to see the Bulldogs.

I spoke with Coach Detering yesterday and I'll be at Merrimack/BG Tuesday. Looking forward to seeing Coach D and Ando!

North/Tyngsboro went well yesterday and I caught the last half inning at South (vs Chelmsford) on the way back to my facility. North varsity and JV beat up on Tyngs who has run into a lot of arm injuries early. Morency, McGowan and Mellin threw for North.

South beat Chelmsford, with soph Jared Maloney started for South and Gendron got an inning in on the bump too.

Overall, I'd say the teams are in typical early season form. Everyone still needs to get timing down, remember the smaller things. The weather didn't help last week with most teams forced inside with the consistent rain....
Iron,

My son tells me they are scrimmaging your team on Monday. Should be interesting, they have yet to see live pitching. He has four AB's against coaches at practice this week, no live BP.

He tried to get guys to hit yesterday and later today (no practice this weekend) and everybody was too busy - the state of the PHS baseball team this year -not the same level of intensity as last past years!!!

Looks like the 58 year old guy has to throw BP to him this afternoon with my busted up arm - too many curveballs in college.

See ya tommorrow

Monty,
Not sure if we are at your place or ours, but it should be fun either way. We just saw our first live pitching against BC High yesterday and we definitely need to see some more live too!
I'm throwing a few good ones against you guys, your son will get some quality pitches his way. Introduce yourself tomorrow, I'm #17.
See you then.

As of April 6th North has had 4 Scrimmages with Cranston West RI, Tynsboro Ma, Andover Ma & Hollis Brookline. As expected Norths pitching is going to be very tough to score runs on.
Also in the 4 outings is there hitting has been outstanding as they have been getting solid contributions all the way thru the lineup and putting up 12-16 hits each game. Granted it's scrimmages but as a whole they are looking very strong. Each game they have only given up a couple runs except for Cranston West as they are a strong Div 1 RI team.
Also impressive is the the depth of the JV players that have been brought up for most of the games. Their is 4 or 5 JV players that can play with the Varsity at any time.
Left on the schedule is a Friday scrimmage (unknown team at this time) and Saturday supposedly is Bishop Hendrickson, South Portland, Portsmouth (TBA). Sounds like a Jamboree or something but not sure till it gets closer to the weekend. I believe MCaravella in a previous post said Milford was at North also so I'm not really convinced yet who is playing on Saturday.

I was at the North vs Hollis/Brookline game yesterday. Kyle Turner went the first 4 innings and was very impressive. When he needed a strike he was able to reach back and throw the next pitch with some extra velocity on it. I've now seen all 3 of North's starters throw and they all throw hard and throw strikes. If they stay healthy I don't see why North doesn't finish in at least a top 4 spot. I also second Eatman's thoughts on their offense. They are hitting up and down the lineup. For the most part their defense has been very good as well, especially for so early in the year.
Somersworth scrimmaged Rochester (Spaulding) the other day. Fairly close match up, Rochester was missing for of their senior starters due to injury or illness, I know one of them has mono, what a shame. Rochester looked about the same as last year, fairly good defensively, but they can't hit very well for a class L team. Our sophmore starter had them down 3to1 after 4 innings. I don't see them making any noise in class L this year.
Milford played south.. Even game I think and both teams played pretty well. We Hit the ball well.. Milford vs North was a different story.. I pitched the first 3 innings and left the game with the score 2-1 cause of soreness in my arm getting too bad and then it got ugly.. North is a very good team.. VERY well coached.. They smoked us.. North will be very hard to beat.. they have pitching coaching and athletes on that team.. Good luck to them and Both South and North played very hard and had great sportsmanship..

Matt Caravella
I made it to 6 games today, started the day at a Salem High hosted Round Robin Tourney, with Salem, Sanford-ME, Spaulding-VT and Londonderry. It was a very windy and cold morning at SHS. However I was able to see Londonderry's CJ Flanders launch two rockets over the Maine Left Fielder. Danny Lagassee and Geoff Fisher both had solid days at the plate, on the other field Nick Poore lived up to his reputation showing why he is one of the top pitchers in Class L. Unfortunately I missed seeing Kasey Corrolla throw today, but have no doubts he will be ready for openning day vs. Nashua North. Over at Nashua North, Kevin McGowan was dominate on the mound and Joe Breen gave a preview of what was to come from him this year as he hit an inside the park line drive laser beem home run. I was very impressed with the North freshman catcher Fortin, keep an eye out for this kid. I agree with Matt Caravella, the North Coaching staff was impressive. I expect big things from this team in 2010. We then took the short drive over to Hollis-Brookline vs. Bishop Guertin. BG would go on to win this preseason match up behind solid performances from Alex Trammell and Matt Blakeman. From what I saw HB is young but has a lot of talent on the horizon. For HB Kenny Glover blasted a monster double to center and pitched the final inning for HB. All and all a good day of preseason action looking forward to the regular season.
I was with Mike at those six games, pretty fun day of baseball. I heard there were a couple games over at Holman wish I had gotten to see those also.

Kenny Glover is a beast for Hollis Brookline, he was playing RF when we got to the game and launched a double at the plate. Came into pitch and was throwing gas. I didn't see him behind the plate, not sure who the kid catching was. Fortin from North was solid defensively, if he gets stronger at the plate I think Mike is right he could be good.

That homer by Breen wouldn't have been an inside the parker if there was a fence, that ball was creamed.

I talked to some Salem parents and they said their #2 pitcher might be out for the season.
Milford is playing Alverine today at 3:30... Sophomore Sean Stroline will pitch and other underclassmen will pitch and possibly me. Hopefully my arm can come around. I have had problems in my elbow and it hasn't been the same.. My velocity is down tremendously, my accuracy is down also, but hopefully by mid season I will be 100%. I pitched Saturday against North and did awful. Gave up walks that hurt me and balls were up in the zone that got smashed. No strength in my arm. I am icing like crazy and trying to strengthen it but am making the season opener start against Bedford. Wish me luck
I told you guys about Fortin at Nashua North. The kid is the real deal behind the plate. He is only 14 too...won't turn 15 till the summer. He is the best defensive catcher in the program with a cannon for an arm. North has 2 Jr's in front of him but if they falter defensively I wouldn't be surprised to see Henderson pull up Fortin for his defense. His offense will come around as well but for now there are enough bats on the bench to hit for him if needed. He will start the season for JV I believe.
