Private school champions?

Teams voluntarily enter the Maryland Private School tourney. My son attends Riverdale, therefore I'm partial, however, unless all the top area private schools enter, it's probably pretty subjective as to say who is actually the best team.

It's fair to say that there are many championship caliber private school baseball programs in the state of MD and the surrounding areas.

Who are some of the best private school teams in maryland?

When we say MD, are we also going to list schools in DC and the surrounding non-MD areas of VA? Or are we only going to list strictly MD schools?

The top private schools that play in the MIAA (Baltimore private school league) are traditional powers Mount Saint Joseph and Calvert Hall. Within the past few years, Spaulding has arrived on the scene and appears to have a strong program too. Those 3 should battle it out this year.

So it's not like the public schools with all teams technically trying to win? I was curious as I know the Baltimore privates can be good but don't recall Riverdale playing them too much...though i have to say I'm probably just not paying attention.

There is no doubt Mt.St. Joe, Calvert Hall, and Spalding are very good year in and year out.

Riverdale does play all three, usually every year and they are very good games.

Not sure how the game turned out the other day. I had a lesson and had to leave, but the Spalding Riverdale game was pretty exciting.

Jeff Kemp/Spalding is a very good hitter, and I like Jesse Gibbs/Riverdale. The two pitchers, Weingardner and Devito were doing quite well (temp was 33)considering I am surprised they were playing.

Bottom line, there are a lot of talented players in the state of Maryland. Certainly proud of them.

I read on the sunspot forum that Spalding won 6-2, but that is all that was there (it was a scrimmage)

Despite the fact that a fresh layer of snow and ice has coated parts of the region again this morning, the first baseball game involving an MIAA team was played yesterday and Archbishop Spalding, which figures to be a strong contender in the A Conference this year, opened with an impressive non-conference victory as it traveled to Upper Marlboro to claim a 6-2 win over Riverdale Baptist, a perennial power in the Washington area.

Junior Steve Brinkley led the Cavalier offense with two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs. Jason Patten added a two-run double and also earned a save, pitching in relief of starting pitcher Paul DeVito, who earned the win. Also swinging a hot bat for Spalding, on a day when the wind chill dipped into the teens, was Jeff Kemp, who was 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI.

Spalding was scheduled to play its home opener today, against Severn of the B Conference, but that contest has been postponed. The Cavaliers now hope to get back on the field on Saturday, when they are scheduled to host Woodrow Wilson.

It wasn't a scrimmage and after Gibbs and Knee each had an RBI off of Devito the bats went cold for Riverdale. The other two pitchers that came in behind Devito were also very impressive. Spaulding is a very solid team, however, with Travers, Winegardner and the rest, Riverdale should do very well this season. Riverdale is now 1-1.

Sorry, I had read it was a scrimmage on the sunspot blog. I now stand corrected. Congrats to Spalding for starting off well.

No problem Soxfan...it is a little early and cold to be playing regular season ballgames! ... but at least we're playing!

the greatest show on dirt is in the WCAC. not just St John's, but also PVI, Gonzaga, Good Counsel and DeMatha.

Home runs by Steve Brinkley, Ryan Woods and Jason Patten, paced a potent offense for host Archbishop Spalding, as the host Cavaliers improved to 2-0 on the baseball diamond with a, 12-8, non-conference win over Woodrow Wilson (DC), yesterday at Spalding.

The Cavaliers (2-0) also had three doubles, as Kody Hines, David Carlson and Eddie Palmer each connected for extra bases.

The winning pitcher was Scott Arndt who tossed three innings and allowed just one run.

Spalding jump to a huge lead in the second or third inning. The score was aroud 12-1 if i remember correctly, and they scored most of those runs with two outs.

I play in the MIAA and we played spalding last year and they were very young and very talented.

Taking nothing away from Spaulding, as they are a better team than Wilson and fast becoming one of the top teams in the area, however, I talked to a Wilson coach and many of the Spaulding runs were scored on errors.

Joe Shapiro, Luke and Whitener each had a HR for Wilson. For a DC public school, Wilson is working hard to build their program so they deserve some credit. And lets not forget that former Wilson HS baseball player; Emmanuel Burris, was the 33rd pick overall (1st round) by the Giants in last year’s MLB draft. Burris finished fourth in the Northwest League minor league, batting (.307) and base hits (78), third in runs scored (50) and led the circuit in stolen bases with 35.

If I remember correctly, Wilson was leading and almost defeated SJC last year until late in the game, Joe Shapiro broke his arm on a play at first. Wilson will give many top area teams a good game this year.

I saw on the MIAA website that Spalding defeated DeMatha 3-0 thanks to a no hitter by Paul Devito. He got his run support from a bases clearing double by Ryan Woods.

Does the MIAA have a new website? I went to the "old" one and it hasn't been updated since last August. The first headline talks about Curley pitchers and the second one mentions that Bordick is coaching at Boy's Latin now.

If there is a new site, I'd appreciate it if someone could provide a link. Also, does Calvert Hall have a website? I'd like to follow the progress of Michael Dillon. He's a very talented young man.

Thank you very much for the link. I enjoy following the progress of the MIAA teams and their players even though I don't coach in the league anymore. It was a great experience for me and there are several young men who play in the MIAA whose progress I still like to keep track of. These players are very talented young gentlemen.

What team did you used to coach for in the MIAA R RInger?

I assisted Kurt Seibert at St. John's at Prospect Hall during the 2004 season when we first joined the MIAA A Conference. It was a great experience for me as I got to see Erbe, Johnson, Durakis, Steve Owens, etc. I really enjoyed that season getting to see such wonderful players. I also enjoyed getting to coach a wonderful group of players at St. John's as well.

I play in the MIAA and i loved watching Erbe play and i am always following his career in the pros!

But most of all, you're creating memories that will last you for the rest of your life. Don't forget to pause and savor these experiences. They go by so very quickly.
