Dow,

I agree with what njbb said

From my experiences, I learned that attending open tryouts when I was in HS was a great way to get more experience when it came to showcase situations and being able to play in front of scouts.

But how old is the HS player? If he is younger not much will happen aside from the scouts that are present will see his name and if he has a good showing they will more then likely remember him and look for him next year. If he is older they will probably approach the HS player once the workout is done, or contact him several days after if he happened to impress them.

As far as traveling to the next state, well I'm from Canada, I used to drive from my hometown down to Kalamazoo in Highschool to go to a try out or two for the Frontier League, again I found it great help for when I went and attended a few PG Showcases.

Hope this helps or at least gives you some ideas.
Dow the camps very rarelr resut in any real follwoup. If you are a pitcher it will depend a lot on velocity. I saw 1 guy signed from about 15 camps my son has attended. He was a junior in college who threw 94mph. I saw him pitch in an Ontario college and frankly he was not great except for velocity. I am not sure what happened to him since.
My son was 1 of 5 pitchers held back (17yo) at a pro camp. The next youngest was 20. He got lots of praise but never heard anything after. Other camps he has done very well at. At a Royals camp he sat down all 6 hitters he faced striking out 3 and heard nothing. The Royals scout saw him pitch 3 innings strking out 8 of the 9 batters and said nothing.
DOC is right it is worth the experience but it is rarer than rare that anything comes of it at that age. I know about 20 guys who have been drafted out of HS and they did go to camps but most were being fllowed from elite travel ball.

THer will be tryouts closer to home you just have to look for them. That is a long way to go for aa few moments in front of scouts.

Alot has to do with your talent.
If you don't have it its a waste of time to go to the tryouts But if you believe you have talent
Why not go ? They wont come to you if they dont know who you are.
Scouts did not go to my sons high school games. He went to pro tryouts, which lead to him being invited to a scouting combine (invite only showcase by pro scouts) That lead to him being invited to play for a scout team, and that lead to scholarship offers and finally lead to scouts coming to his high school games. The pro tryouts were also good experience, they don't cost anything to attend.
All college baseball information forms asked what scouts have seen you, and scout can be a reference for a PG invite
