After a recent showcase a S.F Giants Scout invited my son (2008)to attend a Scout Team try-out. 1st we’d ever heard of such a thing. Up to now he's received minimal attention from colleges, some form letters and invites to $$ camps. Sat he and about 40 other high school age kids attended what was supposedly an invite only tryout session. The tryout was well organized by what appeared to be several Giants scouts/coaching staff as well as some college coaches working the full day event. Yesterday he was notified he made the 24 man roster & starts a 10 game (most games 14 inn) fall schedule this Sat. On the schedule I notice we're playing other scout teams such as the Rockies and Pirates etc, etc. Does anyone know of these teams and what the intention. Is this leverage to possibly use in the recruiting process? We're rather new at all this but learning fast; anyone’s input is much appreciated.

Scout teams are all over the country. They usually are managed by associate scouts who are not actually employed by the teams. They usually have many connections, with college coaches and MLB scouts from their teams.

My son played travel ball for three years in HS for an associate scout who worked for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Many years ago I operated the Chicago Cubs scout for Northern California.
Kenny Williams was on this team, as the White Sox wanted Kenny to learn to play 3b. My son age 16 played shortstop and instructed Kenny age 25 how to position.
Scout teams are the best, do not underestimate the learning opportunity. We are traveling to Australia in December with two scout teams; the Reds and Devil Rays and with 7 pro scouts as coaches. "It is all about "learning and teaching",anything extra is frosting on the cake.
I hope they are using wood bats.
