Son in freshman now.

Junior was recurited to D2 school by their pitching coach during summer ball last year. Pitching coach loves him, he got good deal from school, acad and baseball money.

Fall ball just started, try-outs etc. Junior calls me says all excited, he made the team, (I figured he would), he is having a good fall/transition so far.

Now the bad news, Junior says that when the list came the pitchers met with Head Coach, he told them that the pitching coach was fired.

HC says not sure that the coach will be replaced before spring training starts, Juniors says that the hitting coach is now doing hitting and pitching.

Juniors says that at practices pitchers do a lot of backing up infield/outfield during theirs drills, and run alot. Not much else.

I am very concerned. I am looking for any suggestions, leave it alone and see what happens, or drop a line to HC and see whats going on?

I say give it some time and see if the head coach hires a pitching coach. If you get to see who and how many people apply for this job you will be amazed. I have no doubt there will be some very good candidates to choose from.

Secondly, you should NEVER approach the coach. Yeah you're paying the bills but this is part of the process for becoming a man. If this is truly something you or your son want to know then your son needs to approach the coach and not you. It will completely send the wrong message that you are a meddling parent and that your son isn't man enough to ask for himself.

While the IF / OF, backing up drills and running isn't enough and they should be doing pitcher specific stuff just look at this as an opportunity to focus on the stuff that typically gets less attention. This is the finding the silver lining in the dark cloud.
I have to agree with coach2709 that you should definitely not contact the coach. There's very little you could do this year except make the situation worse for your son. Surely if the coach wants to win, he's going to have to have someone or himself start working with the pitchers shortly. Maybe if he or some other pitchers, particularily the veterens approach him and ask how they should handle bullpens and building arm strength he may get to working with them himself.

I'm sure your son is disappointed, and possibly a little shocked but the beat goes on. 100% Agree with Coach2709 and Three Bagger, let your son & team handle the situation. This is a leadership opportunity for some pitching upper classmen to step up and direct the pitching staff in the pitching coaches absence.
My suggestion would be for your son to follow the direction of the interim pitching coach and be a team player. However I would also suggest he find at least one other pitcher to do pitcher specific workouts (towel drill, long toss, x drill, etc.) either before or after practice. Even if they do it in private on the football or s****r field, they will still be getting the needed work.

As to contacting the coach, I'd agree with everyone else and not do it. If you and your son are concerned enough, have him approach the coach.
Junior seems a lot less worried than I was. He is doing stuff with other pitchers, and he said to me yesterday, "dad it doesn't matter who the pitching coach is I still have to go out there an throw strikes". So I think we will see what happens, the HC has a plan I'm sure, it appears he has been around the block a few times. Thanks.
