I read in our local paper yesterday that the NCAA is recommending "a uniform recruiting calendar for all sports and allow coaches to begin contacting potential recruits after July 1 of their sophomore year, though coaches would still have to abide by the no-contact periods."

Here is the article on the NCAA website:

"Shrink the rulebook", enforcing the rules as well as other proposals are also mentioned.

I like the idea of one timetable. I like the idea of school, conferences or the NCAA pay for medical expenses and any related expensed for the athlete.

I'm going to play devil's advocate......However, under the proposed NCAA (remember those are the guys making money off the college athletes along with the colleges) calendar they will be able to get their hooks (officially)into kids earlier. Possibly earlier unofficially.

While it will possibly affect less kids (elite D1 football and basketball players), I think it is sending the wrong message to an already sports crazed culture. To solve the NCAAs inability to police it's own policys, we're going to move up the recruiting timetable up so there will be less reported violations. Are you kidding me? The guys making these decisions are the guys that stand to profit the most (colleges and NCAA). Why not July 1 of their junior year?

I agree with fenway, one ticking bomb for many athletes is the lack of adequate medical insurance for a serious injury due to the sport, Re: Corey Hahn at ASU. If you have kids playing in college make sure you check out their NCAA supplemental insurance. You will likely be shocked at the lack of coverage.
