I’m with Kerry here! Check with knowledgeable people before taking any supplement. My son uses a shake called "Muscle Milk" (GNC about $30.00) which is approved by his team's trainer. He takes this after workouts and says he feels much stronger and recovers much quicker. Again, ask a nutritionist or a doctor. Do your research!

There is no quick fix to weight or strength.
Are protein shakes really necessary? I have never taken any of them and my old man always says "If they build you up, there must be steriods in 'em" Also, when I get done weight lifting at my school's weight room I always see thes really, really big kids chugging them down and then saying how bad they taste. What is really in them that helps of build up? I know it isn't steriods because if the were then all those kids would be expelled (The high school baseball coach is in the lockerroom when this goes on) and I'm pritty sure that steriods are considered a drug. I am, obviously, uneducated about this whole thing and I was just courious.

My son uses the AdvoCare products and likes the results. He uses the supplement shakes as well as the post-workout recovery.

Their website publishes which of their products contain non-NCAA approved ingrediants. I think only an appetite suppresant falls in that category at the moment and being well under-weight, that wasn't a concern for him Roll Eyes

PS - my mom signed up as a member to get the discounts but just buys for herself and the grandkids who use it. She uses the joint pro-motion for arthritis and has found relief with the product.
My son does a 12oz protein shake 6 times a day. It consists of 2 bananas, 12oz egg whites ( can use the whole egg, just adds more fat), milk to fill blender to 36oz, and 1 scoop of protein powder (no brand in particular). Spread your shakes out over the course of the day, and no more than 12oz per serving. These actually taste pretty good.
He also eats food high in protein. Many of the Stouffers Skillet Sensations are high in protein. They are easy & quick to fix, and have great taste.

I am not as knowledgeable as many others on this subject but in my Family and Consumer Sciences calss I learned the Protein won't help you build muscle unless you are using that muscle and working it. In other words, If you are just taking protein and not exercising you probably won't build much muscle and the protein that your body doesn't use it stores as fat. A good way to see how much protein you (as the average person) should take in a day is, take your body weight in Kg and multiply that by .8 and that is how mush the average person should take in one day. That is the extent of what I learned in my class, I hope I helped.

By the way, Please consult a Doctor and/or a nutritionist before you take anything.

I am at a loss on why many are recommending that they see a doctor before taking a protein supplement. When I was in HS my doctor said if I wanted to gain weight, eat a banana - now maybe docs are better informed today, but I doubt if they all are. You can also increase protein consumption without a "protein shake" by eating more protein foods. Would you recommend that someone also see a doc for that? Now a RD could be of help. Nutritionist? well, there is not a standard degree there like there is with a RD so I would take a lot more stock in what a RD says than someone with a degree in nutrition.

Oh, OK that makes more sense. How does he drink this in school? Our HS is strict on the "no eating outside of lunch" at the school as far as I know. Also they don't have much time between classes as they cram 1800 - 2100 kids in a school built for 1600 - the kids cram the hallways to get to their next class. The variance in numbers comes because currently a new HS is being built every 4-5 years in our county.

Ingredients:
with 12oz of water, I use any combination of the following....
7-8 oz frozen strawberries
1/2 banana
3-4 tablespoons low fat or no fat PLAIN yogurt
1/4 - 1/2 tsp of cocoa
mixed frozen berries
peaches
apples
or 1-2 tbls all natural (no-sugar added)applesauce
1 tbl almond butter (similar to peanut butter but w/o the added sugar)
one kiwi peeled
10-15 almonds

I don't like real oranges only because I don't like to take the time to get all the skin (not the peel) off. Could use unsweetened orange juice.
Everyday for breakfast I have a 24-30 oz shake--or smoothie--consisting of a variety of fruit--usually bananas, peaches, berries (all types), cantaloupe, pineapple, kiwi, etc. I add a little orange juice, green tea, ground flax, mixed nuts, and whey protein powder. I've also added cooked oatmeal and yogurt as well. It tastes great and it is very filling. I use frozen fruits so I don't have to add ice--either fresh that I freeze myself, or the store bought kind. Mix and match the fruits for variety and until you come up with something you really like.

In what way did they end up hurt?
The problem with juices are they are highly processed so many of the benefits of that fruit it it's natural state are lost.

Pineapple is one as an example. As the intention was correct using as an anti-inflamatory aid, the juice will not do the trick.

Better off using a whole pineapple and throwing in a blender. Maybe this is what was used but not what was written.

While I think creatine is perfectly safe there can be a higher risk of a muscle strain. Although I think this is more due to improper training methods that go along w/ creatine use.
the kids youve seen get hurt did not get hurt because they were taking creatine. people on this board give it a bad name because they dont understand what it does and they have the wrong conception of what it should be used for.

there arnt many proven anabolic effects directly resulting from creatine use, so if thats what you are looking for, wrong supplement.

optimum nutrition is a good quality protein, and no one should be having protein shakes 6x a day. as a rule, always have more meals consisting of real food than protein shakes in a day. so instead of having snacks in between a healthy breakfast and lunch, you can have a protein shake or bar with some natural peanut butter.

muscle milk really isnt that great of a supplement, its high in carbs and fat, something you dont want if you arnt going on an all out bulk. protein and dextrose in a 1 : 2 (protein to dextrose) ratio is best right after your workout. some prefer oats blended into their post workout shake instead of dextrose.

all this talk about ask your doctors first, well thats a good idea if your doctor is up to date with information. my doctor doesnt have a clue and tells me taking protein supplements arnt safe for me. yet there are studes posted everywhere by reputable doctors saying that there is no harm in supplementing with 2xbody weight in protein(grams) per day. if you are in high school and lift weights, you should be ready to use a protein supplement and amino acid or fish oils. anything else, make sure to read every piece of information on it possible that is not sponsored by the company that makes it or a forum that they sponsor. always do your homework on what you put into your body.

Great post...Creatine is anabolic though. Cell Volumization allows for greater protein synthesis...of course this isn't limited to creatine as a volumizer.
