My son and I went to watch the neighbors kid play on a 13U American team and I could not believe what I saw. The coach made the kids run to the fence if they got a called third strike!

During the game! Drop the bat and run to the fence!

These are ex pro coaches.

I could not believe what I saw. Who's ever heard of humiliating the players like that during a game?

Every good coach I have seen would never humiliate a player during a game - whats the point? Now he may have a CHAT with a player after the game but away from everyone else (sometimes done in front of teamates if he is trying to make a bigger point).

Seriously, where did they run to, CF, down the line, what. Either way what did the men in Blue do.
My son was playing in a tournament last year as a 13 year old. While the other team was up to bat, the coach who was coaching third base, noticed that some of kids in the dugout were sitting on the bench. In the middle of the inning with a batter in the box, he yelled to his players to start running. The whole team ran out of the dugout and ran down the first base line to the fence and back. The umpire stopped the game and told the coach that it better not happen again. The kids were not allowed to sit on the bench when they were in the dugout. I thought this was going way over board. They were already losing the game, and had a coach that was highly upset by the way the game was going, then he had to embarrass himself and these poor kids with some stupid stunt.
Yup, there's some real geniuses out there when it comes to dealing with kids. All these guys are putting their own egos above the well being of the kids on their team. I was once an assistant on a team which had the bad fortune to mess up a rundown and let a runner score. This idiot called time, sat the entire team down on the mound and ripped them a new one in front of everyone (never mind the fact that the team hadn't practiced rundowns one single time all season).

To clarify, he made them run to the left field home run fence, they were the home team, and the umps said nothing.

It always amazes me what some umpires allow to happen. Im hoping they were just too stunned to react....

Tell the coach not to do that again or I will begin to call strikes based on NFHS rule 7-3-1 which allows a penalty strike to be called if a a batter delays for 20 seconds entering the batters box.....

This sort of discipline is for his time, not mine or the other players time......
Wow, a bunch of "mommy's and daddy's" in this thread. So the coach made them run, big deal. I have used running as discipline forever and will continue to do so as long as I coach. Running a foul pole is so common in my practices that all I have to say is "See ya!" and the offending player drops his glove and takes off. No anger involved, it's just a tool to get them focused. It works, plain and simple.

Have I done it during a game? Not yet, but I have done it during pre-game warmups a time or two. It gets their attention back on business in a hurry. I am quite sure that if I yelled "See ya!" to a player in the middle of a game he would drop his glove and take off. That would be pretty funny and I'm sure the whole team would be laughing. Who knows, I might try it sometime. Smile

I do make my pitchers run foul poles during the game outside the fence when they are finished and have had parents ask why I was "punishing" their son. "Not punishing ma'am, just trying to pump out some lactic acid."

Watching son play in a Babe Ruth game. His team was batting. They scored 6 runs on a bunch of errors and simple mistakes. Finally the third out is made.
The team that gave up the 6 runs comes off the field. The entires team gathers around the very upset coach just outside of the dug out on the third base side. All of a sudden gloves are dropped and the entire team starts to run around the outfield behind the fence. Our pitcher takes his warm up pitches, catcher throws down to second and umpire starts the game. At this point the team had reached the right field foul pole and turned around to continue the run around the outfield and return to the dug out. Umpire motions to the pitcher to start to pitch with no batter in the batters box. Strike one, strike two and strike three. Out number one. The entire team is now sprinting to return to the dug out. The player that was due up next grabes a bat and hussles to the plate. Breathing hard from the all out sprint to the dug out swings at the first pitch he sees for a double into the gap. It was the stangest thing I have ever seen at a game. A true story.
