Wow, a bunch of "mommy's and daddy's" in this thread. So the coach made them run, big deal. I have used running as discipline forever and will continue to do so as long as I coach. Running a foul pole is so common in my practices that all I have to say is "See ya!" and the offending player drops his glove and takes off. No anger involved, it's just a tool to get them focused. It works, plain and simple.
Have I done it during a game? Not yet, but I have done it during pre-game warmups a time or two. It gets their attention back on business in a hurry. I am quite sure that if I yelled "See ya!" to a player in the middle of a game he would drop his glove and take off. That would be pretty funny and I'm sure the whole team would be laughing. Who knows, I might try it sometime.
I do make my pitchers run foul poles during the game outside the fence when they are finished and have had parents ask why I was "punishing" their son. "Not punishing ma'am, just trying to pump out some lactic acid."
