we started using quality at bats last year at 10u so ours is simple..

Quality At Bats include the following: Base Hits, BB, HBP, Sac Bunt or Fly, Hard hit line drive or GB. Moving runner from 2nd to 3rd with no outs, a successful hit and run, an RBI with a runner on 3rd with less than 2 outs, 2 out RBI situations, a 7 pitch at bat.
0 = Non-Quality At Bat
1 = Quality At Bat

Kids keep track and it is a way for them to receive a reward decal for there helmet when they have a quality at bat for the entire game.
I think you have to be carefully about rewarding younger kids for getting walked...at that age i think it can be important to instill in thjem being aggressive at the plate....I used to tell kids "dad didnt buy you a $300 bat to watch you walk!"
i also thjink thjere is too much emphasis on teaching kids to "wait for their pitch" ...the older they get the better the pitcjers will get at NOT throwing them their pitch.....my message to them is learn to hit the ball where it is thrown.
Just some thoughts from my experience over the years
Our QAB formula...

Result Points

HR 4
3B 3
2B 3
1B 2
BB 2
Hard Hit Ball - out (HH) 1
Successful Sac/Hit & Run (SAC) 1
6+ Pitch AB (6P+) 1
Hit Behind runner @ 2B (HBR) 1

out or error (OUT) 0

missed signal (SIG) -2
popped up bunt (PUB) -2
missed sac bunt/hittable pitch (FSAC) -1
failed hit & run/hittable pitch (FH&R) -1
weak swing w/0 strikes (WEAK) -1
K looking (K) -1

for each AB, select the highest single value that applies - deduct lowest single value that applies - total is AB value

cumulative score is AB value / total AB's

What happens when the hitter hits a hard ground ball to the third-baseman when there is a runner on second base and nobody out?

Q-AB for hard ground ball???

Until then, the kids should be learning how to swing!

I get the idealistic notion and the point behind your comment but...

Good luck trying to tell any competitive HS player to completely ignore stats.
Also, for the vast majority of HS players who don't go to the next level, their best hitting memories are going to be about having two hits against their cross town rival or having the most "Xyz" on the team or in the league - not that they learned how to swing better.

Maybe, but my favorite story on this subject is last season one of the coaches was giving my son a hard time for "just going one for four" in a game.

My son turned around looked him straight in the eye and said coach "you are wrong, I had four quality at bats today, I had four hard hit balls with three that just happended to be at someone. I don't control what happens after I hit the ball hard."

Springer would be proud!
BOF,
Good story on your son... wish I could get more to buy in like that.
Yeah, don't get me wrong. I'm big on QAB, as probably evident by my overly ****Smile scoring system I posted early in this thread. I've just found it nearly impossible to get many of the boys to not pay attention to the normal stats. I think your son's thought process is great. I also don't think it's as bad as many others do if the boys push each other or themselves by using stats as one measuring stick. There is something to be said for results.
And tying it back to BD's comment, they certainly have to learn good, efficient swings to get the results over the long run.
