Have a situation that I hope someone can help me with. My son graduated in 2011 and signed to play baseball with a DII school in another state. The school he went to lost there NCAA membership and this year is NAIA. He has transferred to another DII school, not because of the school he was attending lost there NCAA membership but because of his major. He is an engineer major and a school closer to home has received money for there engineering program and it was a good move for him academically. He wanted to still play baseball and knew he would probably be a walkon. He contacted the coach over the summer after he was released from the first college. The coach told him that he would be a walkon and to contact him after school started in the fall. He has had a 15 minute tryout this fall and was told that he had no where for him this year. He knew it was not going to be easy to get on this team but was expecting more of a chance than what he got. Does he now need to keep emailing the coach letting him know he is still interested in playing on the team and that he is continuing to run and work out to stay in baseball shape or just wait until next year and go for another try-out? Thanks sorry so long.

Mom, I respectfully disagree with mcmmccm. If your son really wants to play, he should consider transferring to a JUCO where he would at least have the chance to get on the field as a member of a team (practicing if not playing), rather than as a janitor or team manager.

I realize that academics is important to your son as you mentioned he's an engineering major. Obviously, he needs to decide what is more important to him. Is it staying at this school for his major, or going somewhere else to get on the field?

You indicated that he was signed by the first school to play baseball out of high school, yet the current school only gave him a 15-minute tryout. If the quality of this program is that much better than the first one, based on their past record of success and the talent on the field, then I would question whether his chances next year will be any better.

I'm not trying to be negative and dismiss your son's dream, I'm just being honest based on the information as you presented it.
MomSS91,

What type/level of feedback was given for your son's 15 minute tryout? Did your son request a meeting with the coach to determine what he needs to do and why? I would start there. I would try to determine if what Rick says (above) is true....is the program that much better or is the coach just being a pain in the a$$.

My son is also and engineering major and baseball player. We both know how tough that is. Transferring yet again is probably not an option as most engineering programs have the weed out years (freshmen and soph) and then get into their very specific engineer majors (junior and senior) year. I know at my son's school it would be virtually impossible to transfer into the junior year, and expect to be up to speed.

So, this leads me back to the first paragraph. I think your son has to make an attempt to work his way into the program or the coaches way of doing things. Hopefully that will lead to him finding his way back onto the baseball field.

Good luck.
