Sorry for bad grammar and spelling. I have dylesix work with me.

So i was doing baberuth game. I was a base umpire the runner heads to heads to thrid pass ball i believe it was. or steal.

I didnt get the best view and i ask home plate ump for help. He told me to make the call. (i am there to make sure i am 100% and since i didnt see i wont make a call.
After that the ball bounces other coach from another city complains saying it hit of the runner.
Home plate ask me and i said i didn't see anything hit him. cause he didnt deflect a diffrent way than just awkard bounce.
the umpire says it hit the batter and the runner was out and i think they other had to retrun.
Now was that favoring the team for me not calling a safe out senrio at thrid? So i know were not really suppose to chat with fans/coachs But i know this leauge is very well handle they just having fun.

The runner said the ball didnt hit him i think i should of just said the ball never hit the runner. isntead of think.

Dont worry about the grammar and spelling, we can work through it....

From your post it would seem to me that you are a well intentioned volunteer umpire with no formal training...

In the passed ball/steal of third scenario this is your call 100%...There is little that the HP umpire can do to help you.....you are on top of the play and he is 60-70 feet away....this is where you have to make your own call...

In 2 man umpiring you will find that often you will have to make a call with the information you have at hand and that call may not be 100% black and white...if you wont make a call if you arent 100% clear, you will find yourself in this same situation more often...understand that when working with more exeperienced partner, they will expect you to get your own calls...

in your second scenario, I am less clear....it seems you missed the runner being hit by the ball and the Hp umpire had to make a ruling...do not ask players, coaches or fans for assistance on making your calls..its what you are there for..

now there is a cure for the problems you are having....you need some formal training in umpire mechanics...it will give you the proper positioning that will allow you to get in the proper position to make your own calls confidently,,,

best of luck....

I been umpiring awhile and ususally before we start the game. The umpire i work with say. If your not sure or having anything come to me. they have a better view in this case.

This is nothing about tranning i couldn't see the tag or runner cause both feilders were blocking my veiw. I didnt even ask the coach or manager i know for the fact the ball never hit the runner was my point.

The other umpires i have work with since it was my first year of doing baberuth they told me i had a good stikre zone. and gave me tips and pointers.

The fact that i ask for help from my parnter is he should of gave some help. We are parnters were are they to make fair calls not screw it up.

Tips and pointers are excellent to get from your experienced partners, yet they are no substitute for formal training. The 2 man umpire system has specific mechanics for both umpires to maximize the effectivness of the system....but be clear here, you both have responsibilities....and at times the partner has his own priorities...

In the HP example...he has ball/strike, fair/foul and base touches of his own, he will not be watching the same things you are on the bases....in that case, he will not be able to give you help....it does not mean he should not at least tell you what he had...something like "sorry partner, i was looking at the touch of first, cant help you....but you will then have to "get your own call" with the info you had....

Dont dismiss training, after 20+ years I still attend clinics.....this year I have attended 2 as a student and I am a trainer at the 3rd one upcoming soon...I promise it will give you the edge on positioning to make the best call and to keep from being screened out by the fielders...

we are partners out there, but it is unrealistic to expect backup on every call and to a reputation point of view, you do not want to get the rep of not being able to make the tough call, or wanting help every time it gets rough....partners wont want to work ith you and coaches will not want you out there either.....

just my .02

Stan has it exactly right. No matter how long you have been doing it there is always something to learn. Try to find a clinic near you or go to one of the LL regions, you won't regret it. While having a post game is important, clinics are the answer.
As far as in the game, you have to make your own calls. On a safe/out, that's your's and you have to keep it or you won't have any credibility with partners or coaches.

you sound like your a young fella. thats a good thing, we need young guys getting into umpireing.

heres a tip. you will learn a ton from asking questions here, if you pay attention. get some training it will help you more than you think.

good luck this season.
I am young 22 years old and i got alot of help with other umpire. You know this what tehy said to me "if you got any question or if you not sure ask us"

I think your the only who acutally read and listen to me thanks alot man. I dont think anyone else has. Cause umpire are there to help others out no worry about there own calls.

Micahel s.- i do understand that i will learn new things and mess up calls were only humans but i dont agree with stan at all. I do not have money for clincs and it wouldn't be littel leauge clinc since the closest clic for that is ct. for me.

There some clics here that cost money that i will look into but at the time i just dont have the money.

critter,
You certainly do not have to agree with me and that is fine. I understand not having the funds to attend formal clinics, yet as a trainer of umpires, I hold clinics for my association that dont cost attendees anything...I know MST does the same...

I have also gone out on a sunday afternoon and worked one on one with new recruits such as yourself to get them started...

In lieu of paid training I am going to recommend you find an umpiring mentor.

That would be someone you respect that is qualified and certified in umpire mechanics. Your basic need is a good 2 man mechanic lesson...

Baseball is meant to be umpired by 4 umpires, can be done very well by 3 man (I prefer 3 man) and in most games is done by 2 man....the less umpires the more responsibility that each umpire has and the less opportunity to back up, help or cover a partner. Thus it is imperative that to cover all the nuance of a baseball game that the umpire get his own calls.....

I would encourage you to read up on 2 man mechanics on the internet (free) and there are some fine books available about how to umpire that will help you with your problems. If you want I can send you an older one for you to have..

best of luck...

before i replay i was repsonding to your first time not the second anyone can learn more. I know plenty what i am suppose to do and the umpire was just standing there watching it. I just didnt have the best view. that said as being home plate umpire youi can see the play down there as well. ( I had another call i wasnt sure and double check with home plate umpire and we agreed)

I actually started in calripken (very simliar to litte leauge diffrent rules though) and move to litte leauge and move back to calripken (litte leauge pist me off)I love baberuth and like to work with umpire i did last year.

I enjoy it alot thats why i am back for another year. Big Grin i dont get paid as much as you guys might. (its been going up.

calripiken minor $27 by self
calripken minor $40 by self (i guess it depands where you umpire lol)
calripke major 70 $31 last year not sure about this year everything seem to go up a dollar.
baberuth would be about $37 with umpire
baberuth without and umpire $56
babe ruth with umpire $40/41
baberuth without the bu $60/61 (i dont believe this will update. What makes me feel good is seeing how kids play and having shake hands and umpire telling me i am doing a good job. Big Grin

Edit: i believe i was alitte rude saying i dont agree with you so my apgolize to that. I dont agree the first time though the tranning also helps us i agree. thats why i take stuff of youtube and try it. and that why i ask on another forum what excursie i should get use to.
