I just picked up the book "Practice perfect baseball", and read the chapter on hitting. The chapter is authored by Gary Ward. He talks about the Quick Zone System, and he breaks it down into 3 areas:

Zone 1: between the knees establish power base
Zone 2: Distance between elbows as the bat moves into launching area
Zone 3: Distance of bat head from point of back shoulder

then he goes on to talk about the Front Muscle System:

Muscle 1: muscles inside and above kneecap
    Muscle 2: lower abdominal area
Muscle 3: pectorial muscles of the chest

I have never heard about the zones and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts about it? It was an interesting read.

If your ultimate goal is to play college baseball and are willing to give up some power in exchange for higher on base percentage then Gary Wards approach may be a good one. My son played for a coach that worked under Gary Ward for a number of years and adopted his philosophy. Good hitters can make the adjustments and can see positive results. Pro scouts do not really (from what I have been told and seen)like the approach and some hitters feel very limited as well. My guy always felt like he was too far out front and due to the mechanics involved had a harder time seeing the ball. He had a decent season, but since he aspired to baseball beyond college changed programs to one where he could go back to and keep the approach that gave him all the success he had prior to heading off to college for his freshman year.
