Today was tryouts at my school. Several months ago I posted topics on here asking for advice on how to get ready for them (I was cut the year before). I got a lot of good advice and I thank you guys for that. Anyways, to the action!
The first day we ran sprints, and fielded. I was slow on sprints, I already knew that, I am not the fastest guy in the world. And I did decent in fielding, nothing to standout really. However, I made sure to hustle everywhere, carry the buckets full of balls, and always hustle to pick them up when he told us too. I'm hoping he noticed how much I hustled.
Second day, we hit and pitched/catched to those who wanted to try it.
Hitting again was just decent, I wasn't expecting this however. I have been having lessons and my hitting has improven tons! I think I just got nervous up there (I was super stressed!). Anyways, overall, my tryout was just a decent tryout overall.
Then we started pitching. There was about 15 pitchers and we were throwing to 5 catchers. We all lined up, and each took turns throwing. We had 3 sets of 5, and most got about 15 pitches each. I was in the last set. I stated throwing, and on about my 10th pitch my coach was adjusting me on how I stepped (to step straight, instead of off to the side like I was). Then he commented on how accurate I was. I had thrown just about all stikes so far. Then he starts showing me how to throw curveballs and 2 seamers. I threw my curveball and it wasn't too accurate. Then he showed me the 2 seam, I threw it, and thought I had messed up when the catcher asked, "I thought we were throwing fastballs not cureballs!" The coach said that my 2 seamer had a ton of movement on it. So then they showed me the cutter, and I threw twice before the pitching coach said, "Get out of here I've seen enough." Then he went to the coaches and shouted,"we got a cutter!" I probably threw 35-40 pitches, and they were out there looking at me for a long time, showing me different pitches and stuff. Is that a good sign????
Now, I did have some wild pitches, when I was throwing 4 seams it slipped out my hand once and flew way behind the catcher. However, the coach said,"that's all right ____. You don't think I ever hit the backstop? I used to murder that thing." So he acted like it was no big deal. Then on both my curveballs they were way high too. But he didn't care about that either really, "he said I'd have to practice it, and that it's all right since I've never thrown it before."
So, what I want to know is, even though my tryout was mediocre in everything else, will a coach take a player that can pitch real well, even if he didn't do that well in tryouts?
Note: The coach has seen me running sprints up the hills at the school at night on several occasions. He has also seen me hitting in the batting cages on several occasions. So he knows that I have a good work ethic and am determined to improve.
