1. How many Ivy coaches are typically represented at the Stanford Camp? Is the event an environment where they can get a good assessment of a recruit?

2. What are your thoughts on attending two sessions of HF-Long Island in the same week, vs. attending the Stanford camp + one session of HF? Target schools are Ivy + NESCAC.

Thanks

The list of coaches attending Stanford in the past has been repeatedly published in the last couple weeks on threads here. In my 2012 & 2016's experiences, 4 were represented. Regarding HF, if a rising Senior, I recommend attending HF Sac in June (it's better in some aspects than Stanford). Then attend one HF Long Island in August.

Thanks for the input. What are some weaker aspects of the Stanford Camp vs Headfirst?

My son went to Stanford Camp and HF as rising Junior and again both as a rising senior.  The fun factor is there for Stanford but in my opinion the better exposure for the academically qualified recruit is at the HF events since it is more intimate.  If I'm understanding you correctly you are considering doing two HF events back to back same month? - The coaches will be the same most likely. I personally think that might be viewed as over exposure by some coaches that are there to try to see two camps full of varied kids. Both Stanford and HF camps have value and I'm sure some schools view one more useful to them than the other.  If you can only do one and you seriously want to be recruited I'd pick HF if you are hoping for a cool camp experience with good lectures and a college dorm exposure do Stanford. The downside for Stanford camp is so many of the games occur all around the Palo Alto area so unless the right eyes are at your game you cannot showcase yourself to all the coaches there - the stats go out to all coaches but they can't just walk over to your game and watch since most coaches have duties related to the camp - i.e.) coach a team, time the running, run a fielding drill etc. To your first question - all the Ivys were at HF and most attended Stanford camp.

Very informative replies, thank you. Based on the coach lists from last year I am now leaning towards HF Sac in June and HF LI in August.

You've gotten good info here, and your plan is not a bad one.  But, if you want to be seen by each of the 8 Ivys, I would do Stanford (either July or August session) and HF (does not matter Sac or Long Island).  Unless things changed just this past year, there are 2 or 3 Ivys that do not go to HF and there are 2 that I know that do not do Stanford.  But, if you do both, you will have a chance to be seen by all 8.  My Ivy bound 2016 RHP did the following and it worked out well for him:

Summer before Sophomore year - HF Long Island (just to get his name out there and to get acclimated to the scene/experience)

Summer before Junior year - HF Long Island and Stanford All-Star II Camp in August (one was the week after the other).

If I had to pick one over the other, I agree, it would be HF.  The main reason is that at Stanford games are spread out over 3 locations.  Also, at HF, they strongly encourage and even will facilitate direct dialogue with coaches.  But, we also would do Stanford all over again, if I had a 2nd son.

Good luck.  PM me with any specific questions.

RR13:  Here is another option if you are considering IVY/NESCAC-- Showball's Academic Showcase also in Long Island in July. 85 coaches in attendance , so far 6 Ivies scheduled (vs 5 so far at HF).

Can vouch for Showball, as 2015 attended their Ft Myers Megacamp in December during sophomore and Jr years--very well run. Went to HF the summer before his junior year--perhaps early in recruiting cycle and rain did not help event. Don't see Columbia listed in either .Cost is also $200 less than HF. Attached gives you list of schools.. as in any case go to the events that feature schools where there is the biggest interest--coach to player and player to coach.   Good luck!

PM'd you Bucs.

Rough,

I didn't follow here to see whether you have a 2017 or later.

I'll add that in my 2012 and 2016's experience, they did HF Jupiter as Juniors (roughly end of October, beginning of November).  Stanford Future Stars the preceding Summer was fun for both boys, but the schools attending were a smaller set and more varied, i.e., not all high academic.

When 2012 was recruited by the Ivys, several would not attend HF and others not Stanford as previously noted by Bucs.  2012 did PG National Academic end of his Junior year and was seen and offered by two of the Ivys there.  He also did a GPA Baseball Camp which I'm not sure exist anymore....this was run primarily by the Ivy HF defectors though I know Yale has come back into the HF fold.

Good luck!

Rough, One HF session in NY should suffice.  As has been said above, the coaches overlap substantially and they can see what they need to see in one session.

Best,

1. My understanding is that an Ivy would need to see me more than once to offer. Is this wrong? I do have an impressive 60 time but its not like I'm a 6 ft 90+ LHP. Also, I don't live anywhere near the northeast so its not like I can just hop in a car to a school's camp that reciprocates interest.

2. FYI, I am a 2017. HF Sac + HF LI would put me in front of almost all the Ivies twice and all the NESCACs once or twice (based on last year's coach lists). Only 2 Ivies are left over that would not see me at all, but I feel like I can work something out with their RCs based on our current correspondence.

Thoughts?

Rough:

An Ivy will need to know your academic qualifications first, including SAT/ACT.  If you are in the academic ballpark, then they can evaluate your baseball skills relative to others on their radar.  The number of times coaches might seek to scout you in person would depend on several variables, including your skills, body of work, competition, references etc.  Most of the Ivies participate in camps on the west coast, including not only HF and Stanford, but also others.  By coordinating with the RCs at your schools of interest, you can likely ensure they see you at least once, if not twice.

Another relevant variable is your travel club if you play outside of school, and specifically tournaments that might allow coaches to scout you vis-à-vis D1 competition.  This would include Perfect  Game, AZ Fall Classic, etc.

Best,

Bill
