I am sure this has been done many times before however my son starts his unofficial visits next week and I would appreciate some feedback from those that have walked this path before us.

Please share some of the questions you asked or wished you had asked when meeting with schools that were recruiting your son (or you as a player)?

After looking over the NCA list go to the college team website. Most have a lot of information and stats that can help you. Analyze the team, the players, the stats, win-loss records. Who is at your son's position? Sr or freshman? How good is he? Does the team over recruit? Is there a lot of turnover on the team? Why? Do they recruit in your area? Do they recruit JUCO players? Are they fully funded? How much do they spend per player? (Found at another message on this website) Then do not ignore other colleges in their conference. Most conferences have colleges that are similar in size and composition.

The two overall best questions for students:

What do you like best about this school? and

What do you like least?
Here are some of the questions that I ask:

Is the coaching staff present at practices? If there is a JV squad, who is coaching? How long is the coach planning on staying at the school? What are the strengths of his program? Weaknessess? What is the GPA of the team? Is there academic advisement for the team? What is the support for the program from the administration? Parents? What is a typical day for the player in season? And a million more questions!!!
I would have him ask the players what being on the team is like as far as time requirements, etc.

My son was very surprised at just how much time team activities take up. Practice, morning lifts, mandatory study halls, mandatory attendance at school functions, "voluntary" workouts, etc.

The commitment is huge, much more than alot of people expect.
Getting a chance to speak with players is a great opportunity to find out how they were recruited and what made them choose this program over another. We found a freshman player--with the recruiting process still fresh--it really helped my son decide when he heard that this kid had been recruited by several very hig caliber programs..and in the end chose the program because the coaching staff was so fantastic.
