We are new to the area. I have a 14U and 17U son who are not playing baseball this fall season. Looking at various sites I see that there are several mergers going on. One between DBAT and the Dallas Mustangs and the other between Dallas Tigers and the McKinney Marshalls.

My question to anyone that can answer it is, how do these mergers effect the players. Example: if my son were to tryout for the Dallas Mustangs (which we have already been in contacted with) and he makes the team how would this effect him in the spring. Would he still be Dallas Mustangs or would be DBAT? I guess the same question can also be asked about the Dallas Tigers and McKinney Marshalls.

Will these clubs have only one team or various teams and what level of competition will they play.

If there is a link that would explain all of this, can someone please post it here

Why not contact the organizations?
Texas Crude,

What is your deal? If you don't like it, start your own club then Lil Crude can be shortstop...

It isn't like there isn't anywhere for players to play, you just have to be good enough to make the teams (and that has always been the case, even before the dreaded mergers).

Just quit crying and b#*ching about it, it's pathetic at this point.

RH ... I disagree with you to a point. This particular merger is partially about polictics rather than how good the player is.

Normally I would say that talent is the reason lil Johnny makes the team but on this one its only partially correct.

Is there a roster yet for any DBAT Mustangs teams? How can you say it is about politics when there isn't even anything to talk about yet?

What politics? Is Sarah Palin's son going to be on the team or Barack Obama coaching?

It is so easy to cry politics when something doesn't go the way a person wants it to. Maybe all you experts can get together a form a perfect organization where only the best play at the appropriate position and all the parents hold hands and sing "Kumbaya" after each victory.

First of all Tycho... I'm not whining. Never have never will... My son is already on one of the teams so your accusation of me is incorrect.

I do not know if there is an official roster yet but most of the players have been contacted by their respective coaches.

Also... I think Palin's son is going to Iraq to serve his country not play baseball...
Ok, then I will start the list of questions and answers. I would suggest that they apply to whichever merger you are discussing, and whichever one is the "political" one....

Q - Are you going to play the sport of baseball?
A - Yes

Q - Will they boys be expected to play the game correctly?
A - Yes

Q - Will the team be playing to go to Farmington?
A - At least one on each merger teams will be, possibly more.

Q - How much does it cost?
A - Baseball is like boats, if you have to ask you can't afford it. Save your money, pay for college instead.

Q - If my son makes the team will he get a chance to be on the field?
A - Yes

Q - Will my son play every inning of every game?
A - Probably not.

Q - Which jersey/hat will they wear?
A - Who cares.

Now here are the questions you really want to ask with the answers:

Q - Is my son good enough to make the "A" team?
A - Don't know, come to a tryout and let's find out.

Q - Does he really have to tryout?
A - Yes.

Q - I know he had a rough summer, he only hit .064, had 43 errors in 44 attempts, no college is talking to him, and he has never started a game for his varsity high school team, runs a 22.8 60, but we all know what a great player he is. You can't just put him on the "A" team?
A - No.

Q - Will my son be the starting shortstop every inning of every game?
A - Probably not unless he hits over .500, never seen anybody over .500 sit long. And with Mr. Yarborough and Mr. Kettler in the mix at the merger teams, your son better bring his A game because he will be competing for playing time against two of the best shortstops in the nation, not just the DFW area. (No disrespect intended to either player listed, and I could go on for each position, I assume you all get the point - RH).

Q - If my son isn't good enough to make the "A" team, won't he be "left out"?
A - No, there will be somewhere for him to play, either with a merger team or elsewhere.

Q - But it might not be as thrilling as making the "A" team, or as good for him, right?
A - Right

Q - Can't you guarantee my son a spot on the roster, or tell me he won't be on the "B" or "C" team?
A - No

Q - Isn't this about politics and not baseball?
A - Yes, we just want to take money from parents of the kids we like, we don't care if they win a baseball game or not (You really think this is the answer?)
Real A - What????? Does your wife tie your shoes for you in the morning? Here's your sign.

All these questions answered, and I can't think of any more really important ones to ask. The reality is you all know the answers to the questions you want to ask, you just don't like the answers.

I didn't accuse you of anything. You claimed politics, but you didn't explain why it is politics.

I am glad your son is on one of the teams, his team will be good.

I realize Palin's son is serving his country, my comment was tongue-in-cheek. That seemed to get lost in this case.

I guess I just don't get the public criticism of any team, unless they are doing something illegal or immoral. Each organization does things to help the kids, and hey try and make a few bucks along the way...a win-win if you ask me. If the talent is there, the team will be good and the recruiters and scouts will attend the games and make offers to the players. Obviously, not every player will land his "dream" college, but the opportunities will be there.

Most parents realize that there are multiple teams at each age for each organization. If you ask the right questions, you can find out where your player is at in the pecking order. Then he can decide if that is where he wants to be, or he can move on.
PS III played alongside one of the best SS in the country for the last few years. He still played plenty -- at multiple positions, including SS -- and will help his college team from multiple positions. Ok, maybe he was the #2 SS....but....things work out fine for talented kids. Trust in your kid's ability and be confident that there is a place for him to play....next summer and beyond. Cool

Tycho... I figured you knew about Palin's son and my comment was as sarcastic as was yours. I realize each organization does what them feel is best for themselves and the teams they pick. I have no problems with that at all...

But... the teams were chosen without a tryout of any kind and I found out about through another parent. It just kinda rubbed me the wrong way. Was my son disappointed??? you bet... but he called his new coach yesterday and committed and I think he will have a great experience this next summer.

I get that, and my kid experienced the same thing when he was 15. He got cut from a top organization after he had a great season and was pretty bummed. He was told that the guys they had coming back were better and there was no spot for him on the "A" team and he didn't want to be on the "B" team. But things worked out well for him in the long run.

Well, at least we woke up the Texas Forum a little...

I agree with you... Sometimes it helps to have disappointment. It could possibly make them a better player because of it.
Our questions regarding being new to the area (locating from Southern California) and just trying to figure out what is the best thing for our kids. We understand as parents that they have to earn a spot on any team and we hope politics are not involved. We have always taught our kids, to earn their spot on whatever team they are on. If politics are involved, you try and do your best and learn from it and move on next season.

After talking to several clubs listed here and a few that are not they all pretty much tell you the same thing. We as parents have to figure out who is telling us what they think we want to hear vs what is actually in the best interest of the player.

Just talking with parents there is so much interest about these mergers, it makes someone not familiar with these clubs a little hestiate to join. Maybe the clubs really just need to be more upfront on what is going on and not leave the parents to try and figure it out themselves.. I know everyone says just call the club. We have and I can say that they all say about the same thing.

I hope that all clubs will post when they will have their upcoming tryouts. We have a 14u and a 17u.
COB,

You are wise, the best advice is don't let anything on this website play a role in your decision making process.

I would also expect to have your sons at a bunch of tryouts since they are new to the area and the coaches/clubs/other players may not know them too well.

The truth is none of us (parents, coaches or even the guys running these clubs) have any real idea how this is going to work out since it is new and still a work in progress. But know that there will be somewhere for your children to play. Also know that the DBAT/Mustangs, Tigers/Marshalls, Patriots, Monarchs, etc. will all put good clubs on the field. You/they have to find the right place for them to play, and, if we are all honest, the parents weren't any better or worse at that before the merger than they will be after. It's the same guys running the clubs, the stories of what they are selling can't have changed that much in the last couple of months, so I don't think the bullshot has changed any. And asking the right questions for your situation will wade through it pretty quickly.

The clubs are really good about posting the try-out information. Most of the teams also have websites - those included in and not included in the mergers.

Texas Crude - glad to see you have relaxed since the mergers were announced.

Sooooooooooo... RH can you tell me who is in charge of the DBAT/Mustang/Marshals orginazation??
Tychco mentioned that his son was cut from a top team at an earlier age. Obviously, he rebounded from the disappointment and went on to achieve great things.

My son was on an "A" team for 16U and after a rough summer was demoted to the "B" team for 17U. After the initial disappointment wore off, he too rebounded and ended up with a nice college deal. One of his summer teammates, a RHP who also was deemed not good enough for the "A team," led his high school team to the 4A state championship and enjoyed a perfect 18-0 season this year. This fall, he is a freshman player at Tychco's son's future school.

My point is, whether you are on the A, B, C, or D team, if you have the talent and the tools, you will be just fine. It'll all turn out in the end.

Straight from the website:

"The D-BAT Mustangs Baseball Club will begin operations on September 1, 2008. Tryouts for 2009 teams will begin in November 2008. Any questions should be directed to Shayne Currin at (214) 551-1979 or email him at marshalsbaseball@hotmail.com. Look for tryout information on the clubs website in OCTOBER at www.dbatmustangs.com"

Obviously, I am sure you can also call/email Cade Griffis, Sam Carpenter or Kermit Dow for information.
.....I am a little confused.

Did the Marsahls merge wit the Tigers,(see quote below)?

Also, earlier, someone said his son already called the coach and committed to the team (Dbat/Mustnags?)...then there are tryouts in November? Are the tryouts for just a few spots or the lowetr teams?

Just trying to understand.

Thanks

There is a DBAT/Mustangs merger and a Tigers/Marshalls merger.
Most teams start with a core group -- then add players to strengthen the team. There are very few teams that start with an empty roster and build it from scratch. Too many parents get anxious about the uncertainty and begin to look for a sure thing. So, yes -- there are tryouts -- and yes, all team members may be asked to participate -- but yes, some have spots.

Where has the Tigers/Marshals merger been discussed in an official capacity? I haven't seen it.

Maybe the teams aren't completely chosen, but said team does know that your son will not fit on a specific team or organization.

Ever thought of that?

This is only hypothetical and does not directly reflect your personal situation. Simply a statement to think about.

As a coach, I had very tough decisions about what is best for the team as a whole versus each individual.

In each individual decision, a coach must make better judgement for the organization.

You walk a fine line. Players and parents want what is best for their personal situation, coaches and organizational staff want what is best for teams.

In the end, as a coach, you think it through and follow what you think is best for all parties involved.

Sometimes the end result "rubs" the parent "the wrong way".

As a coach, I never concerned myself with what the parent thought. As long as I knew I made what I thought was the best decision at the time.

Ken... I agree with you. I've played and coached for 40 years so I do understand sometimes coaches have to make decisions that are unpopular. I think as coaches we've all been in that situation.
