I'm in the mood for some serious mechanical talk, so heres this question:

When people say, "hes got quick hands" or "he really gets his hands through the zone quickly"- what do they mean? A proper swing is using torque so the swing is propelled by the hips, and the hands don't do too much work, no?

Please explain.

I respectfully disagree, I think the hands are important. The bat is in orbital rotation around the core rotation - shoulders/hips/legs.

Without the hands, the energy/torque/leverage generated cannot be transmitted to the bat, to allow it to be transmitted to the ball, without the hands. The weakest link, IMO.

Oh man....he just used the word "torque" and "hands" in the same sentence.

This could be a long thread.

Catch43, maybe this will help....if someone tells you that you have "quick hands" be very happy and don't look the gift horse in the mouth. If you think about it too much that leads to paralysis by analysis and your hands will get slower.

As far as your thought about the hips, etc. I'll pose a question to you...ever see a hitter with quick hands and slow hips/core? It is possible but very rare that the hitter is anything but an opposite field hitter with limited power.
I'm with you Catch43,

How about "top hand to the ball"? or "hit the inside half of the ball"? I know that these are verbal cues, but they are ment to assist a hitter with the concept of "quick hands".

No disrespect S.Abrams, and I do agree with you, but this thread could stand to go a couple more posts before cooler heads need to prevail. Big Grin

Being from Chicago I see both everyday. Ryan Theriot, quick hands, limited torque. Derek Lee, slow/lazy hands and a lot of torque.

A lot of times the amount of torque or separation being created is dependent on the hitters body type. Longer, lankier guys can create a greater degree of separation and sweep through the zone at a pretty quick bat speed. The opposite can be said of shorter guys with avg. levers. The can only get so much out of their body.
