V means the # of eligible years you have played and L means how many letters you have accumulated, I think. Example 3VL, means the player used 3 years eligibility with 3 letters earned from that school. 3V means he has used 3 years of eligibility but earned no letter. 2L means he played two eligible years and earned two letters at that school, now in his junior year, probably a redshirt or a transfer in. Usually you will see RS (redshirt) or TR (transfer) in the roster and bio as well to give you a clearer idea. For example RS/SR 3VL means he's in his last eligible year and so far earned 3 letters working towards his 4th.

I may be off with the explanation.

That's what I think that it means.

That sure helps. O.K. so for example, the Auburn Tigers have the following designations littered about the roster--and I'm trying to figure out the meanings:

HS- This would be a freshman
2L- This would be a two-year letter winner
1L- This would be a one-year letter winner
TR- Transfer
SQ- ???

Amazingly, The Tigers have NO seniors....that seems almost impossible but it's true.

Now STANFORD on the other hand only uses designations like: 1V, 2V, 3V, HS, RS. Does that mean they have no letter winners?

SQ = On the SQuad but no letter. Hmmm, It's unusual that there are no seniors. Many juniors sign pro contracts after their junior year. I know my son played at Auburn and signed a pro contract after his junior year as did many of his teammates.

The (#)L and (#)V and TR RS and HS is just the method the statistician chooses to list the players' experience. I think "V" means Varsity and "L" means Letter and the number that precedes the letter designates the number of years---- L and V are basically one in the same ----- I think Big Grin

Fungo,
The purple Tigers only have one senior this year and he was a RS.

If you look at many college rosters, therr are very few schools that really have many seniors on their rosters anymore.

Anyway switchhitter I hope you get it now. They all do it differently.Big Grin
