Go to the "Find" function on this board and look up "Stalker" or "Jugs." Both brands are fine. Stalker is considered the Gold Standard for measuring speed. Both have far more range than you need at the HS or college level for gunning pitchers.

I've posted about cheapie SpeedChek type devices (40 foot range) which have merit for self-training.

The Stalker guns have been made for years under the same model designations: Sport (currently $900 new with rechargeable battery handle) and Professional (currently $1,550 new). But those models have evolved. Current models are better than older ones.

BTW, The pricey Stalker Pro is rarely seen. It offers greater range, and RF interference protection when used among many other guns in a pro scouting environment.

Remember that the expensive batteries have a finite life...about 300 chargings for a Stalker. $100 to replace. (if the Stalker comes with 5 or 6 battery handles, you know the gun came from a scout LOL)

If you can find a one or two-owner Jugs for $400, that would be good. It should be easy to find a parent with one to sell. Watch out for guns coming from teams or traveling scouts.
The Stalker needs to retuned every 2 years or so--fortunately the State Troopers in my state use them so I have mine tuned by the gentleman that takes care of the Troopers

Also on the batteries they do charge as often as people think-- they tend to die ahead of time if not allowed to run down completely and then recharge

Because doesn't fit. I was this way before I met him.

In fact, an employee of mine is the same way. The joke around my business is "he and I are not allowed to be there at the same time". Smile

By eliminating political correctness I can usually say in 10 words or less what others take 10 paragraphs to say.

Deal with it.

Yeah, that is a pain with the Stalker Sport. After the gun is used, they suggest that you fully discharge it (by leaving it on continuous transmit) before you start the charging procedure. The whole discharge/charge cycle can take 10 hours. The $1550 Stalker Pro uses a type of battery that doesn't require full discharging. Pro scouts tend to have several battery handles in any event.

Stalkers now come with a tuning fork that will read 65.3 mph and they also have an internal test that should read 80 mph. If those don't read correctly, the gun should be returned to the factory. There is no owner-accessible speed adjustment.

The manual says nothing about routinely returning the gun to the factory. But not many dads are going to be testifying in court about gun readings Smile

If you read more and typed, less you’d learn that there is often a lot more in those 10 paragraphs than just political correctness.

Why don't you refer this line to Mr. Byrd who eliminates discussion and learning by banning dissenting voices on that grade school site you and he are involved in.

Maybe, just maybe, if learned opinions were not censored, maybe, the site would graduate to at least the jr. high level.

You offer a decent site for tball and coach pitch levels though. Keep it up. Those coaches who have never played need help. And, they usually go for anything.

Stalker's are the way to go. Seems as though scouts only use stalkers. Jugs guns seem to read about 2-3 miles per hour faster. Difference of reading out of the hand as opposed to the plate, at least that is what I have been told.

Jeesh, that same "lore" comes up here every few months. Both guns have range sufficient to pick up a ball immediately after thrown. Sampling rates are sufficient too.

I've seen a Jugs and Stalker used side by side and didn't notice any difference overall. Other posters who have hands-on experience with both guns report little or no difference with current models.

Maybe we need to call "Mythbusters" to test this

the stalker gun will cost you about $100 more than a Jugs gun, almost all mlb scouts use stalker guns and alot of college coaches too. A number of college coaches use jugs guns.

At a recent showcase, we had 3 jugs guns side by side next to 3 stalker guns. or 6 guns on the same pitcher.

The pitcher was a consistent 82 mph on the stalker gun, Stalker guns were about about the same always.

Jugs guns was anywhere from 77-82 mph on the same pitch which was 82 mph on the stalker guns.

verisimilitude \ver-uh-suh-MIL-uh-tood; -tyood\, noun: 1. The appearance of
truth; the quality of seeming to be true

another showcase I had saw a pitcher throw 86-87 mph on ten stalker radar guns. The showcase operators was using jugs gun recorded and posted 91 mph on their web site. After much complaints from MLB scouts they were exaggerating their MPH times, the showcase now uses stalker guns and stalker guns only.
Is it possible that the Jugs guns are more accurate?

Here is why I ask. I recently received a flyer from Stalker about the new Stalker Sport 2 gun. In the flyer is states and I quote "Improved (higher) release speed measurement".

Now, if I read that correctly, it sounds like Stalker is saying that their guns read slower than they should and they are trying to read higher like a Jugs gun.

Any thoughts on this?

Not sure its about accuracy.

Its really mostly about what is the standard. If professional clubs used Jugs, the Jugs reading would be the standard. Right now, the Stalker is the standard.

I agree that Stalker has been the standard, but if they are the standard why change it to seemingly match Jugs with a higher release speed measurement?

To me it kind of sends a mixed signal.
