Why are ones waaaaay cheaper than others?

I can't imagine that the ones selling for $500 less are that far off the speed that it's so cheap. Does it have to do with how close you need to stand from the throw?

Thanks.

With the cheaper ones you just about have to be standing right behind the catcher to get a reading. With the good ones you can stand 200 feet or more behind the catcher. Both are accurate. It's just a matter of range.

Sometimes it can be a matter of production and the location in where they have been produced. Also there can be a few extra materials used in order to ensure extra safety protocols, or accuracy towards measuring the speed of the ball. It's all a matter of marketing, and measuring up the competition with its extra features and/or safety enhancements in order to make customers feel more secured and/or more prestigious than the other who has a cheaper gun. Stick with the one that meets your needs and if safety is a concern, see the more expensive ones that probably recognizes the unknown issues most marketers don't tell you about with radar guns.
According to my research, the stalker radar gun is the standard for the MLB, reason being that it has a longer ranger and fewer misses. With it's top-notch technology, it can carry on a greater consistency towards measuring speed, and also carries 3 times the power than an ordinary radar gun.

With that said, it seems that this radar gun is widely used for consistency and range. Up to 350 feet of range and an LCD screen to increase readability. That's all based on my research.
