Squeeze is on, bunt goes down the third base line and the runner scores, the throw to 1st is late and the runner is safe. Right after the ball is released from the 2nd baseman's hand ( who is covering 1st), the runner on first realizes no one is covering 2nd and takes off it, reaching safely. How is it scored, an RBI double?

A similar question came up in this forum a few weeks ago.

Couple of things: you can't credit an error for a mental miscue, like not covering a base.

That the batter/runner made it to 1B before the throw gives him a single. As I interpret OBR 10.04, his advancement to 2nd would be scored as a fielder's choice.

"Ordinarily ... if the runner stops and takes off again when he notices the misplay, credit ... a fielder's choice."
KcKid there are TWO scorekeeping questions here. The first is obvious. The batter reached 1st base with a safe hit and he also drove in a run with that hit. That gives him an RBI single. Next question: How do your score his advance from first to second base? There was no misplay that could be scored an error so there is no error. I personally would score it a stolen base but some could indicate there was a defensive indifference to the steal and indicate a fielder's choice. I say it was not indifference but a breakdown in defensive coverage. See description in OBR that RPD indicated that "might" apply in this case (in bold type).

FIELDER'S CHOICE is the act of a fielder who handles a fair grounder and, instead of throwing to first base to put out the batter-runner, throws to another base in an attempt to put out a preceding runner. The term is also used by scorers (a) to account for the advance of the batter-runner who takes one or more extra bases when the fielder who handles his safe hit attempts to put out a preceding runner; (b) to account for the advance of a runner (other than by stolen base or error) while a fielder is attempting to put out another runner; and (c) to account for the advance of a runner made solely because of the defensive team’s indifference (undefended steal).
