One of my sons played with the temperature of 32 degrees at game time, with a stiff wind chill of near zero. And it was damp. It was brutal. I have never been so cold at a game in my all my life. There is NO WAY that the game should have been played...it was flat out too cold to even grip a ball. Not too mention hitting with the metal bats, which are not supposed to be used in temps that low.

That was the game in which my son tore his labrum. He has never been the same since. And the bite of it all is that the game was called in the 3ed inning due to darkness, so the game didn't even count.

The coach was totally negligent on this one. Dare I even say he was abusive? Sure. The coach was abusive that day.

On opening day the year before, on a Saturday, my other son played--and hit a ball and the bat shattered. It was cold that day, too, but not nearly as frigid, only in the 40's. But with the sun shining, it wasn't too bad. But the bat shattered none-the-less----and I have the pieces to prove it. It was a miracle that the shrapnel didn't come flying at the pitcher or third baseman. The shattered edges of the bat was as sharp as a razor. It could have been deadly.

The coach should have learned his lesson about cold temperatures, metal bats, and the human body. I sure did.

My son pitched a college game in temps around freezing. During the game it was alternating snow, sleet and drizzle/rain, with the wind making it truly miserable. I tried to use an umbrella but the wind made the umbrella very awkward to hold with frozen hands!

Meanwhile, my son pitched his only complete game of his college career (freshman year). Somehow he was able to keep putting the ball in or near the strike zone with frozen fingers, and the coach was happy not to have to risk one of their more experienced pitchers. The opposing team used 4 pitchers while giving up 22 runs in 5 innings. My son gave up 1 run in the 1st and then shut them out the rest of the way, and the game ended with a "mercy rule" 22-1 win after 5. I don't know why they even played in that weather, but it was one game I was very happy to see end!

I played a scrimmage my senior year with it snowing hard. Probably was mid-20s or so, maybe a little warmer. I was wearing two pairs of sweat pants, 2 or 3 sweatshirts, multiple long sleeve shirts (one or two Under Armour type shirts), and a coat over the top of that. Probably had 3 or 4 pairs of socks on and somehow my cleats still fit. Catching that day was awful. Not only super cold (stinging the hand) but the snow was in my face all morning.
My son had three really brutal cold days he pitched in 3 years (low teens early 20's) and amazingly he did well. The reason being I think, for a sinkerball pitcher the ball worked better without heat and humidity. In the upstate in SC, many 30,40 degree nights of baseball.

First game of his last season, I am sitting in the stands watching son pitch with snow falling, that for me was weird. It was about 29. It was COLD and I hated it. Two layers, scarf, gloves and blanket, it took a week for the chill to go away.

What's the warmest... try 100 degree field condition with 98% humidity. Ouch!

Played after a morning of sleet, but it had warmed up a bit. Played in the thirties twice - night time.

I really think it's the parents that suffer. Smile I'll sit on a blanket and have one over me. Include multiple layers - it's not a pretty sight.

We are supposed to have 3-5 inches of snow tomorrow. Good Gracious. Season opener is (was?) Tuesday. Calling for a high of 37. Friday, 4 days later, calling for a high of 71. Go figure.

A few years ago in high school, our high school played in East Hardy, West Virginia; we joked they built the school on the first flat spot after crossing the County line, which was several miles. Nice school, but not the place to be on a cold March night. The bank clock said 24 degrees as we left town. It was so cold our coach formed a "K" with his fingers to get guys to make outs to get it over with...
every other year, during april vacation. our high school team goes to cooperstown. it's about a 5 hr drive for us. we play a league game against our rival school on doubleday field. they do a 2 day thing ,so the kids get to go to the hof.

they are very protective of the field and it was around freezing, with overnight sleet/snow. we ended up waiting 3 hour's then started playing, got in 2 innings and they called it. for snow. long, long drive home.

we play in the cold often. usually with some snow still around. i thought every body did? Smile

when our kids were little we went to disney for xmas. first morning it was 28 when i got up. in the park, everyone in the park had those huge mickey hands on, no gloves in the gift shop, so they were the next best thing. i'm sure they set a record for hand sales that day.

Brrr!
Last Friday I had the pleasure of meeting AcademyDad in Millington and joining him while we watched a "very cool" game in which his son (Navy) took on his older son's former team (Air Force). Temps were in the high 40's bight sun and not really all that bad. This morning and one week later we wake up to 12 inches of snow with temps in the 20's. Winds N at 15 to 20 mph --- Double Brrrrrr!
South Louisiana - brrrrrrr - we are hosting a tournament this weekend. It is 32 degrees this morning, first game today is at 10:00 am. Hopefully it warms up a little. It was a miserable, cold, cloudy, windy day yesterday but at least the sun is out this morning. So much for making money this weekend, the only item that we sold a lot of yesterday was hot chocolate. Global waming??????????
I love the picture of the field in Main with all the snow on it. I'll have to send it to my son who just this afternoon told me how his team spent several hours the other day shoveling wind blown snow off the Right Field warning tract only to recieve several more inches yesterday. Just one of the hazzards of playing college ball in the state of Nebraska. He's getting pretty fustrated but will be makeing a spring break trip to Georgia week after next.
Don't tell me you drank the Kool-aide too????
